Summit 3" Exhaust Install

I am in the process of installing a Summit 3" system and wanted to point something out. One thing to be aware of is that my kit and probably most is based on the single large cat when they say cat back. My 04 has the two mini cats and as a result you cannot just bolt this system in. You need a new mid-pipe that must be expanded to fit the reducer. I elected to to have a custom 3" pipe made that goes from the y-pipe to the muff. I also hope it will not be overly loud (wifes truck), it has a plain old turbo muffler in the kit so nothing fancy. My experience with turbo muffs is they are not too noisy, so we'll see how this one does.

The factory exhaust is rusted badly but doesn't seem too weak. Are the factory system all stainless? (Cheap stainless like 409) Just wondering as I am going aluminized, which is a downgrade. :(

Re: Summit 3" Exhaust Install

Update: It is LOUD!!! And the resonance in almost unbearable, even for me!! I am looking to maybe install a resonator now upstream of the muffler to try and calm down the resonance/drone, or maybe replace the muffler with something MUCH larger to tone her down. Resonator install will be much easier though.

However aside from the drone, it sounds great!!! :)

I ran into a similar problem on the 94 Dakota with the 5.2 that I owned. Removed the cat and the interior resonance was unbearable. I swapped in an 18" straight-through muffler and it was great. Got any pics of it?

Re: Summit 3" Exhaust Install

No Pics yet, but I'll prob get some this weekend. I thought with a turbo muffler I would have no issues. I have used turbo mufflers before and have never had issues. A friend of mine at the muffler shop (owner) actually says that the 4.7 HO engines are notoriously loud with aftermarket exhaust, especially large diameter. But I don't know why it would be other than compression.

A resonator will fit reall nicely, I am just hoping it solves the problem. This cheap is exhaust is costing more by the day (not much more but still). I am wondering if I had used a magnaflow or similar muffler if I would have had issue? I think the primary cause of the resonance is the expansion at the Y to 3". 3" is notoriously louder than 2.25" or 2.5" even. But you gotta use 3" :):)

I'll keep you posted and get some pics up once i get them.

Re: Summit 3" Exhaust Install

My experience with the classic turbo muffler on my 1968 Plymouth Fury is that the body size of the muffler is directly related to resonance. Smaller body = more resonance Pair that with large interior volume/shape of space and you get major resonance. I am guessing a Magnaflow would help reduce the resonance but the resonator will do it better and cheaper. I did a Magnaflow 12589 3" in/out muffler on my previous 2006 Dodge Ram QC 4x4 with the 4.7. After the muffler swap it had a bit of resonance that was very dependent on engine RPM.

When I replace the WJ exhaust I will go with 3" pipe and a 3" in/out Magnaflow muffler.

Going to look into a resonator. As you can see plenty of straight pipe to fit one in!!

That cat looking piece.is a resonator. I been told by all muffler shops in Chicago land.to either leave it or get a high flow one but its needed due to over accessive cabin noise. A simple muffler install gives the tone you are looking for. My Turbo 4banger is open pipe from Turbo 4" and is annoying at times.

What cat looking pc? Did you post pics that I can't see? There are no cats in my pictures.
After additional research I think a resonator is the way to go. I will try to install the longest one I can find and see how that works. Consensus is that is should solve my issues.

Any performance gain? I want to do 3" but every time I do that, I loose low end torque.

Got any pics of the section over the axle and the tail pipe?

Can't say on performance increase. It feels faster and quicker but I think it is really just an audio thing!! :)

Here are a few pics puts its hard to show the pipe over the rear.

That looks nice. Got a Summit part number? Any dimensions on the muffler?

You need one of these for the front of exhaust:
