Updating maps on the 2014 and backup camera question.

My salesman claimed the maps were magically beamed from the satellites, which i know to be false, I'm also guessing they do not auto update via the cell service. Nothing is free, anyway to check the date on the maps and where to check if there are updates? It should be all current for now but just trying to get a jump start.

Also, does anyone know if the backup camera can be activated while moving forward? Thinking it would be good to check on a trailer while going down the highway.

I know for my 2013 the map version is listed under system information in the head unit. The maps are updated via a CD that can be ordered from navteq I think ($150). I'm not sure what has changed as far as updating on the new 8.4 head unit but I highly doubt it is downloaded on anything other than a CD/DVD.

The Explorer Sport (2013) updates via an SD card (as best I can tell).

That being said, yeah, expect a yearly release and to fork out $100-$200 for it.

what if your 8.4 doesn't have a CD/DVD?

I'm sure you will be able to upload it through the SD card or thumb drive

USB.

See wk2jeeps.com...

Navigation System map and Point-Of-Interest (POI) data updates may become available occasionally through the Navteq Maps web site (NAVTEQ navigation - Update your sat nav with the latest NAVTEQ maps.). The updated information as well as some additional feature applications can be downloaded and copied to Universal Serial Bus (USB) media for transfer and installation to the navigation module within the Radio Receiver Module (RRM) (also known as the radio or the head unit) in the vehicle. These are fee-based applications and updates, which are made at the option and expense of the customer.

Be glad you aren't in Australia. Jeep Australia are selling their Overland here with sat nav that has not worked for at least 14 months. And Navteq will not release any maps or updates - go back to Jeep. Old maps and routing that doesn't work.

Customer service?? Jeep Australia has certainly not been honest or even interested. It has made a lot of Jeep owners here very negative about the product.
