2014 LED DRL off when Signaling? Anyway to change it

Hey, so after reading through many posts and even seeing some youtube videos, I noticed that when running the 2014 LED DRL's they will shut off when the turn signal comes on. When I first saw that, I was kind of dissapointed as I think it looks tacky (looks like a lamp burnt out) and now I'm afraid I wouldn't want to use my turn signal as much. (which wouldn't be safe)

Anyone who already has an Overland, Summit or LuxII do you know if there is a way to keep the DRL's on when signaling?
  • What happens if you switch the DRL's on manually, will they stay on then?
  • Or if you turn on the DRL's with the Fog lights, will they stay on then?
  • I'm pretty sure they at least stay on when the HID's are lit and signaling, correct?
I've seen this happen before on other vehicles like the Chrysler 300 and I always thought it looked dumb. It's unfortunate to see the Jeep is now the same way. Thanks for any info on this!

If you manually turn the LED DRLs on by placing the switch in this position (this runs just the DRLs and the tail-lamps) then the DRL stays on but just dims a little when you hit the turn signal instead of turning off completely:

When the full lights are running at night (or if you manually turn them on during the day), the LEDs stay illuminated with signal.

They only turn off completely with your signal when you have the lights in Auto mode. Every other mode they'll stay on.

Awesome! That is very relieving to know!! Thanks! I can live with it Dimming, thats a ton better than it shutting off completely.

So on that note, when you run the HID's at night and use the turn signal, does the LED's still dim? Or do they stay bright when the HID's are lit?

LEDs stay fully lit while signaling with full HIDs on. No dimming.

I know this probably won't be very well received, but you really wouldn't use your turn signal as the law requires just becuase your LED DRL would not be lit on that side? Sorry, but that's petty and utterly ridiculous! And as far as I know, even on the high end cars like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, etc. that have these lights the LED DRL turns off when they signal to turn. It's that way for safety reasons.

Take what you will from my comment, but I had to throw that out there. I hate when people turn and don't use their damn turn signal.

On Audi's it's possible to disable the DRL 'winking'. but yes, it does come that way from the factory.

There is some law that someone quoted that if the distance of the DRL and turnsignal is less than 100 mm then the DRL must cut off or dim to enable proper visibility of the turnsignal.

I would prefer someone knows that I intend to make a lane change than they blame the DRL saying your amber blinker was completely washed out and have a crash.

Of course I'm going to use the signals still, was just seeing what the alternatives were with the DRL's going off. I live next to a busy store entrance and hate when people come down the road and don't use their blinkers making me wait for them to get to the entrance and turn instead of using the blinker and I could of pulled out sooner. "that's what she said".

In any event, I also don't understand why the DRL's need to turn off to display the turn signals. The LED's are not that bright and if you can't see the Amber Turn Signals with them on, then you probably shouldn't be driving to begin with. Especially since the turn signals are LED's also.

Was just curious as to the options for keeping the DRL's on.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe you probably have to use VAG-COM to disable that feature, similar to many otehr features that can be enabled/disabled/modified using that software. Made plenty of changes to my '08 VW R32 using VAG-COM. Hell, I had all sorts of people come to me for that simply because I refused to charge anyone for 15-20 minutes worth of work. Got me lots of free beer, though. :D

yup, needed to be coded through vag-com, but i believe the newer cars have the option available in the MMI

U.S. DOT Standard No. 108; Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.

S 7.10.10.1 Spacing to turn signal lamps. Each DRL not optically combined with a turn signal lamp must be located on the vehicle so that the distance from its lighted edge to the optical center of the nearest turn signal lamp is not less than 100 mm unless,
(a) The luminous intensity of the DRL is not more than 2,600 cd at any location in the beam and the turn signal lamp meets 2.5 times the base front turn signal photometric requirements, or
(b) The DRL is optically combined with a lower beam headlamp and the turn signal lamp meets 2.5 times the base front turn signal photometric requirements, or
(c) The DRL is deactivated when the turn signal or hazard warning signal lamp is activated.
