Mystery screws in sun roof!

Ive been having the same problem with my a pillars and homelink leaking so today I decided to tackle this once and for all. I opened my sun roof fully and looked in the track and found a screw on either side wedged in the run. They were at the same spot in the track on either side but weren't screwed into anything. Has anyone else come across this? Mine is an 05. I don't think they serve a purpose. Not sure if the previous owner was trying something.

it seems common that many of us have "rattles" in the sunroof and loose screws seem to be the cause. I know mine rattles, I guess I need to check as well!

Just an update.

I haven't had my sunroof open since the end of the summer last year. When I would have it fully open and push the button to auto close it, it would begin closing and then stop about 4 inches from being fully shut and open back up. I had to hold the button down to override this to get it shut. After removing these "mystery" screws from the track, I pushed the auto close button when it was fully open and it worked like a charm. Seems to have fixed the issue and hopefully the leak as well. We will have to see. I suggest anyone with a sun roof take a look at the track also.

Question- were the screws just loosely sitting in the track or were they 'screwed in' and securely held in place by their threads?

When you unscrew them by a half turn they went loose but there was no hole they were screwed into, if that answers your question.

I wonder if it was the drunk guy that was assigned to do sunroofs in the WK.

"Hey Jim, you drank the most at lunch, you get sunroof installs". lol

Lol thats funny... Sad thing is those are supposed to be in there. Now my sunroof is fudged. Looking up parts now because the plastic guides cracked.

I checked my sunroof during lunch. No such screws in the track. Maybe they go somewhere else in the assembly and fell out, landing in the track?

You mentioned plastic guides- I have a 2005 Mazda Tribute with sunroof. One of the cable guides (plastic) snapped and roof became unusable. Dealer wanted $1200 to replace the entire unit. I found a repair kit online for $150 and fixed it myself. It was not easy- had to rip out most of the interior (headliner, visors, A/B/C pillar covers & the whole sunroof assy), disassemble the unit, replace both plastic guides, reinstall, calibrate, and put interior back together. It was a PIA but save lots of bucks and it works great now.

Yea could be thats what I was thinking, that they fell out. Im definitely not taking it to the dealer cause I can only imagine what they will charge. Do you remember where you found that repair kit? I rather go that route and do it myself.

Ill keep searching, I checked that link and its for 93-98 cherokees and its for a windshield weather strip. I mean hopefully the parts are cheap considering the glass is fine, motor, and track. Its just 4 plastic pieces that move along the track (2 each side). Thank you for trying to help though, I appreciate it.

Re: Mystery screws in sun roof!

If those served a purpose they were not a factory purpose imo those are NOT factory screws. Those don't look familiar at all less the screw bin at your local hardware store. They don't look factory they look like a uniform cookie cutter machine screw head.

Good luck with the repairs!

If you need pictures of a known good I would be happy to at your request, Obviously I wont be dropping the head liner or disassembling things but I would be happy to assist if any open sunroof pictures would help you in your repairs. I am going out of town this coming weekend so if you need them let me know before then.
