Need some help/advice/suggestions

Guys/Gals

I'm going through an internal debate with myself and would appreciate your opinions.

Background: I've been a lurker on this forum for a very long time and my dream car (truck) has always been a Jeep SRT. With that being said I received a really nice promotion a few months back and was prepared to pick up a new 2014 at the the end of the Summer as my DD. About a month after my promotion my wife got an offer with her job that was to good to pass up.

The Downside is that we are going to have to move midway between her job and mine. This means my commute is going from 10 miles (one way) to almost 40 miles (one way).

I currently drive a Lexus IS350 (paid off) that I was planning to sell and use as part of the down payment on the Jeep. It gets pretty decent gas milage (25-27 highway) Other than spending a good chunk of $$ on fuel and a lot of depreciation what are the downsides of putting 20-25K miles a year on the jeep?

I have considered keeping the Lexus to drive back and forth to work because its in great shape and I know the history of it but the 17K+ it's worth would be a vey nice down payment and it would take a long time for the fuel savings to add up to justify this. I had also considered getting a $5-7K car to use for back and forth to work but I know that i'm still going to end up driving the SRT more than not because I want to enjoy the commute so the payback on this would also be several years.

Thoughts, Suggestions, Ideas? Anyone on here other than Mongoose put a lot of miles on their SRT?

I drive over 25000 miles per year and couldn't be happier. I say go for it, it's your dream car (truck). The way I look at it, if I am driving so much, at least I will make sure I have a smile on my face every day. Life is short and the SRT is a great all weather daily driver.

I drove 28,000 miles in mine last year. The fuel sucks ($7500 is about what I spent in 2012) but honestly the only major expenses that get to me are replacing the tires ($2,500 if you stick with oem and have dealer install them) and new rotors/pads ($900-$1100).

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear that other are putting miles on theirs and there haven't been major problems. I chew through tires on the lexus so am used to that annoyance.

Mine is a DD as well. Put about 50-60 miles on her a day and she loves it!!!!

You only live once. My son has a 2006 SRT8 and I have a 2012, and we love them. The 2014 will exceed your expectations. Find a way to pay for the gas and place your order NOW!

You have nailed the 2 biggest downsides: 1) going from a "paid for" vehicle to a pricey one, and 2) GAS.

The only other downside is that the OEM tires and brakes wear out around 20k miles.

There are many upsides.... 1) power, 2) excellent all weather traction, 3) excellent interior, and many more. The greatest is the wide smile on my face when I crank my beast, no matter how bad a day I've had.

So, ante up and get a JC SRT, or keep on driving the Lexus and increase your 401-K contribution!

Go for it!!! The only way you get to enjoy a vehicle is to drive it anyway. I've done the just get transportation thing before. Lasted about 6 month's then had to trade. Even my friends told me I was in the wrong vehicle. Gotta enjoy life and your toys!!!

Someone mentioned that the brake pads and rotors need replaced after 15,000 miles. Can someone explain why and if replacing them with non OEM solves this?

I have over 17K on my truck and just took it in for an oil change. The dealer said brakes look good and should have no problem getting to the next oil change (23K). I don't track my truck but do drive it hard and most of my driving is "city" driving. Hope this helps.
