First road trip

I loaded up the truck with all our camping gear and we headed out towards the mountains for our annual hippy weekend (theleaf.org). Our trip has us stopping in Hickory NC to get a slightly decent night's rest before the camping and poor sleep begins.

Needless to say, I was eager to try out my truck on an extended trip. 2.5 hours of purely highway driving. No radar detector since my Escort 9500 is still wired in my other car.

Observations:
- this truck rides as nicely in the highway as my bmw and nicer than my wife's CRV.
- adaptive cruise control is possibly the best invention I've ever experienced. It's awesome. I poo poo'd it when I first read about it but it made the drive a breeze
- Bluetooth streaming is really nice
- bing search worked reasonably well to map out our trip to the hotel. I used it to search for the address and it shuttled it right to the nav. They should be smart about detecting who is trying to use it, though. My wife was trying to input the hotel details but it locked out keyboard input while in motion. I can't imagine it would be too hard for them to figure out if it's the passenger entering data so they don't need to lock out input while in motion.
- average mpg of 22.4. 99% highway. Probably averaging about 70-75 mph. Headed up into the mountains so some mild climbing so far

I love this truck. I should not love it so much already. It hasn't proven itself to be reliable yet. I'm still worried its not going to start after camping all weekend. I'm still sure there's some terrible paint defect I haven't yet found or some awful leak that hasn't yet happened. The abs module is going to go out or I'm going to get a SERV 4WD message. It's going to die on the highway. Something terrible.

But I love this truck.

Yes you should love your truck..... I will have mine almost a year on June 8th and I love it like the first day I got it. "The Other" is still jealous of my Jeep... She huffs when I say its time to wash the cars, 9 hours later my baby has had a nice massage and bath and her just gets a wash haha.

I am going from MD to Orlando and back next month(15 hours one way). That will be a test!

That's great that you love your Jeep, as I love mi e too. Do I worry something is going to happen, sure I do. Nothing I can do about it other than enjoy it while I have it..

I did get a SERVICE 4WD message but only because I did not roll the car in neutral before engaging Low gears. And the car refused to come out of 4LO without slow speed rolling in neutral. But the message went away and the car complied after RTFM.

If you didn't spend time on this forum, you wouldn't even know about those issues. And they only affect a very small number of owners. I'm not trying to minimize the problems a few are having, just trying to say you have every right to love your truck. I love mine too. We're heading out on a road trip today, and I'm just going to enjoy the ride. Live the good life, and if trouble comes, deal with it.

It sure does ride nice. Personally, i'm not worried about taking it on long trips and running into issues. I have been keeping a close eye on it since it is a new car but i'm not losing any sleep over it or worried if and when it breaks. I passed 1000 miles last night and all is good so far. I'm looking forward to taking it on long trips very soon.

My previous car was out of warranty and very expensive to repair, that's why i traded it for a new car with a warranty so i don't have to worry about it. Just enjoy your new car and if it breaks let them fix it!

"Is that a 4x4?"

"Yes."

"Could you use those spots? The hi and dry ones are for other cars,"

Hell yes! Let's get the truck dirty! With my weather tech slush mats, it was all good.

Re: First road trip

So the truck sat parked for a couple of days (the longest time it's gone not driven or started since I bought it) and it started up, no problems. I know this seems like a "well, no duh!" thing but there have been no end of horror stories about trucks not starting after a little while.

The drive home was great. Smooth as expected. Aside from my son getting car sick, it was perfect. 4 hours without needing to stop since my kids slept most of the way. Not a single issue. One small squeak in the head liner that needs to be pressed to fix and that's it.

The round trip, up into the mountains and back, with some really slow driving in the middle (a mileage killer for any car) and the truck returned 23.6 miles/gallon. I'll post that in the mpg thread but thought it should go here too. My wife's CRV would have probably gotten about 28 for the same trip. Not bad considering the JGC's extra size and oomph. And I did not baby it at all. Most of the trip was with the ACC on set to about 72-75.

There was one small quirk when setting the ACC. When I set it with not much room behind the car in front of me and then tried to set it higher for when I got out from behind the car, it gave me an error saying something like "ACC/FWC error. Requires service." To give you an example of what I was doing:

Get onto the highway and accelerate to what was probably the speed of the car in front of me, say about 60 mph. Press "set". Then immediately attempt to increase the set speed by pressing the "set+" repeatedly because I eventually wanted to go 70. If I didn't do that, there was no issue. If I just waited a couple of seconds, it was fine.

Overall, a great trip. Now I need to wash her.

I wish my '13 HEMI got anywhere near that much on the HWY! I was getting 17-18 doing 75 going through some Montana mountains when I headed to Missoula. Nice '14 btw as well!
