This is old news. I had a job in 1960 selling American Motors products (made a lot of money) and the first thing they did was give you 500 imprinted business cards. The theory was that you hand them out to your friends as a friend wouldn't screw another friend on a car deal.

That said, I've been buying cars from the same two local family owned dealerships for 28 years. Sometimes I've paid more than the buyer in a metro area and sometimes less.
The service has been excellent and I feel good about supporting a dealership that supports the community. With very few exceptions, every car/truck I've purchased has been a factory order. Dealers with turn and earn allotments appreciate it and more often than not, the price reflects this.

In reading a lot of posts here, it appears that more buyers are interested in "screwing" a dealership than they are in establishing a long term relationship that benefits both parties.

For the record, I haven't worked for a dealership selling cars for 53 years.

I had a bad experience when i walked into a dealership one weekend to just look around and i had 5 salesman in 4 golf carts basically surround me, i told them i was just looking and they proceeded to argue which one was going to help me, i told them i just was just looking and maybe test drive the new 14' GC, i told them what i was looking for and ill be darned if they didnt have one pulled up by mine and asked for me to come in and start the paperwork, i said "WHAAT?? hold on i didnt agree to trade or buy i was just looking like i told you" at this point i felt so uncomfortable when they were asking for my keys to look my jeep over, i said "no, im leaving" and i quickly made it to my jeep and locked the doors and i very quickly left the lot with the salespeople waving in my rearview mirror. I swear i never had such an uncomfortable experience, especially with them pressuring me to buy right now. I will NEVER return to that dealership again, i even called the GM and complained.
If i go to a dealership now and more than one person approaches me, i just turn around and leave.

I don't like the sales folks that approach and want to start pumping and shaking your hand like a friend you haven't seen in a while especially during cold season, or really anytime
Maybe the carpel tunnel has something to do with it but as I think about it I prefer to develop initial meet through talking not pumping of flesh
Gosh how could I have said that much regarding shaking hands with car sales people....lol

I guess I was lucky, had a really positive experience at the dealership with zero pressure. I think all the Internet research I did before I went in made a big difference.

I've been to several dealerships in Houston this year (Jeep, VW, MB, Audi) and have experienced nothing but hands off. If I walk around the lot, no one approaches me, if I enter the building I am asked if I have been helped, and if I say I'm just looking I am left alone. When I do finally talk to sales, they are polite, and don't ask for my contact info when I'm done talking or test driving. They all have a similar line of, 'if i can be of help with your needs, please come back and give me a chance'. Nothing like what I experienced three years ago, when I stormed out of every dealership...

"we need a $100 deposit on credit card, before you speak with the Finance Manager, just to prove you are serious" Uhhhh how about I walk into his office, tell him I am serious, and you can go do something else for a while. Even when mentally prepared for the hijinx and shenanigans that will be employed, it still gets under my skin.

My favorite experience was when I walked into a Ford dealership (Has Planet in its name) to test drive the 150 and 250. I had no intention of buying, but fell in love with the 250 and decided to purchase it on the spot. They started the stupid four quadrant thing and I said I'm paying cash, so only talk to me with the drive out price. Both the salesman and the manager said I would need a co-signer to purchase it, since I was 26. I went all WTF, I am paying cash for the damn thing, and they said it was irrelevant, I still needed a co-signer. I swore loudly to the entire lobby I would never shop in any dealership owned by that family. They called me a few days later asking if I was still interested in the terms they proposed, I won't say how close I was to the end with that phone call..

Nothing against the brand, but my worse dealer experiences always seem to be at Ford dealers.I remember when they came out with the retro Mustangs and my wife and I went in to check them out. I told the lady who greeted us that we weren't planning on buying and we just wanted to look and right away she responded saying we shouldn't waste their time especially on a holiday weekend when they make their most money. I ignored it and had her pull a specific model out of storage which they had in their parking garage and when she brought it out and I sat in it, I said it was too cramped. She then tried to talk me into trying a fusion or 500, but I quickly stopped her and told her we were leaving and didn't want to waste anymore of her time. She realized what she had did and tried to make up for it, but the damage was already done.

Isn't it illegal to refuse to sell a car offered for sale to an adult for cash ? Are the rules in Texas different ? YWTK.
