Yelp replacing Bing on UConnect 8.4an (2014 models)

Just got the e-mail:
Dear XXXXXXXXXXXXX,
In our constant effort to enhance your driving experience, we are pleased to announce the local search that powers your Uconnect Access will switch from Bing to Yelp.
We will begin transitioning from Bing to Yelp in vehicles on or after June 14, 2013. This means that once the transition has been completed, Bing will no longer be available with Uconnect Access*. The transition should be seamless, transparent and exceedingly easy. To activate Yelp search:
Select Apps>All Apps>Yelp on your Uconnect touch screen
Or press your voice recognition button and say "Launch Yelp" and then "Yelp Search"
I think this is good, as the search results were mediocre with Bing around NYC.

FWIW: COULD THIS COINCIDE WITH THE MEDIA APPS OFFICIAL RELEASE? I SAY YES.

I just got the email as well. I don't mind and I've used Yelp a few times to find some good bars when going out with the guys to areas we've never been.

It may ultimately make NO difference. It is quite possible that the change would be cosmetic and without any real impact on the quality of the searches performed and results displayed. In June 2012 (a year ago) YELP and BING partnered to power local searches.

I believe the change is more directed at providing restaurant and other attraction "ratings" in the searches. As Yelp seems to have a greater quantity of data about this information, the idea behind it would be to give you more direct information about the Restaurant you are looking. Personally I use Google for most computer searches but when looking at Ratings and reviews Yelp is very much accepted as a standard in that market.

I must be old since I never heard of "Yelp" and don't GAS about in car apps. Isn't that what one's phone is for? Sorry for the negativity, but given the rate of change with electronics, apps & phones, etc., this whole thing looks likely to develop into an endless headache of updates, changes, crashes and more, especially as vehicles age. Can't see easily getting a new touch screen and/or associated hard & software in 6-7 years, never mind 10-15 years.

Give me a reliable, durable and fun vehicle. BMW has pissed me off by the increasing use of "why tech" over "high tech". Does Jeep, et al really need to do the same?

You must have owned an iPhone at some point ;) I can blame lots of problems on the way they update stuff.

I can attest that this UConnect system is light years ahead of what anyone else in automotive is doing. It puts the Cadillac system to shame (next closest). Myself and some other members posted the first big update on the new systems yesterday. 3 months to a major update is pretty good and people who have done the update have seen a "noticeable improvement". I will run one later on this morning.

Yelp has been around for years and they are "decent". The fact they are switching the search engine to one developed around how good the points of interest are is a likely useful improvement. It shows they are at least making an effort to move in the right direction.

Oh and I want to add.... touch panels will be very available in the future. Nearly all of the Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Chrysler product will have that screen surface for the controls (available). Never before has there been such cross platform support and they are doing this with engines and transmissions too (HD8 tranny is the same in the trucks). It was one thing I can say Mercedes did very well. 1 transmission in 80 percent of your product makes for higher quality, lower expense and less expensive future serviceability or package replacement.

Bing and Yelp are two completely different things. Sigh... Yelp is more specialized for one thing where as Bing does a lot more. I can understand why they would limit search capability to Yelp as you don't need to do the same level of search that Bing provides.
