HID fail
Just had my right hand HID headlamp fail on my Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2.
Has anyone else had this happen?

I noticed when I drove into the dark shed with the lights on, the left side was bright as ever and the right side was like an orange candle flame colour. I switched everything off and when all was cooler started the car up and put the headlights on. The right headlight was bright as ever to start with but within seconds of heating up she started to dim to the candle flame colour.

If anyone has had this what was your experience with warranty?
Maybe just as easy to replace bulb myself.

Any thoughts? as I will contact my local dealer tomorrow.

Re: HID fail
Possibly not the bulb, but the ballast.

Re: HID fail
It has been reported a few times before on this and other forums, certainly not uncommon - here's one thread.
On the caravaners forum in Aust some time ago, one owner reported his dealer refused warranty as the HID globes are only covered for 12 months - but if you read the above thread there is conflicting information around......
Good luck and we'd be interested to know how you get on.

Thats what is happening here, goes a purplish colour.

Not surprising. I belive many of them haven't even heard of a Grand Cherokee before, even though they supposedly work on Jeeps daily.

Re: HID fail
He said he was just new there, so may not have worked on a jeep before, yay love getting the novices or apprentices to work on my cars for practice.

At the time of writting this had a call from a service dept. "blah blah blah have to get the car in to have a look to see what the problem is could be something else causing problem". Could very well be, but still he could not tell me if a globe was under warranty though. Very non commital. I may be cynical but I can see my $$$$ going their way.

I've already been in touch with another dealer who has said it is covered under warranty. Not hard to guess where i'm going to them.

Re: HID fail
If they try to charge you more than $60 tell them to stick it.
It should be covered under warranty for the first 12 months for the globe and 3 years for the ballast. The problem with the JGC is the lights seem to come on and off all the time. I do not run my lights in auto anymore as I want the globes to last.

Re: HID fail
Good oh, thanks for that, I will be do the same with the lights.
I was thinking afterwards that maybe he did have a point to go checking things for a possible cause, or is that just a thing with these globes and ballast are they just a fickle thing that can fail at a whim.
