Re: 10w30 or 10w40 oil for v8 laredo?

The V8 normally takes 5W20. Only in very worn engines 10w30 or 10W40 could restore the oil pressure a bit. The number 5 is a reference of the viscocity of the oil when cold.(not a number for the actual viscocity). A 5 oil is thinner then a 10 oil when cold. This thinner is important, because the oil will flow more easily to all lubrication points. Most engine wear happens at cold start, when lubrication is marginal or not at all. So it is important that the oil flows as soon as possible to all points. You see that they even use 0W20 oils, which even flow more easily when cold.
The 20 number is a reference of the viscocity when the oil is at operating temperature.

A 2000 with a V8 takes 5W30. 10W30 is also acceptable. NOT 5w20.

Don't put 10W40 either. It will tend to coke up the oil rings.

Sorry, you are absolutely right about the 5W30 and not 5W20:o
But what is according to you the advantage of a 10W over a 5W oil? The stories i red from an oil specialist, is that the 10W is just to thick to lubricate the engine well when cold, increasing the engine wear unnecessarily. Even the 5W is still too thick when cold, but a lot better then the 10W. Once hot, 5W30 and 10W30 have the same viscocity, so then its ok.
10W40 will be too thick when hot, increasing the oil pressure, but reducing the flow.

No advantage. I would, and do, use 5/30.

Unless you live in alaska, All the oil specialist stuff between 5w30 and 10w30 doesn't mean squat in real world application. It won't be the difference between your engine going 150k miles or 250k miles.

Keeping a 4.7 full of oil and changing it every now and then with a wix filter. That will make the difference.
