Ultimate SUV: Range Rover Sport or Porsche Cayenne?

To me, the Ultimate SUV has be Awesome both Onroad and Offroad. Several SUVs manage one or the other, but few can do BOTH well.

Among SUVs there are only 2 (IMHO) that deserve the title of ULTIMATE SUV.

- The 2014 Range Rover Sport (Supercharged)
- The 2014 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

Both are capable of awesome Onroad performance (0-60 times of 5 seconds or less, excellent handling, etc). Both can handle their share of Offroad challenges as well.

Both manage these feats in large part due to their Air Suspension systems; which allows them to raise or lower their stance as needed.

So... does anyone thing another SUV should be added to this exclusive list?

(unfortunately the JGC WK2 doesn't make the list since it takes TWO of them to have both good Onroad (SRT) and Offroad performance.

Yes, add the WK2 - and delete the RR and Porsche asap.

Onroad and Offroad tests are inconclusive for the RR - magazine and press reviewers have not been able to schedule enough road/track time between dealer repair visits.

For anyone considering buying a RR (why??), would suggest opting for the Premium Tow Package. Dealers charge $5,995 and it provides coverage for the 1st 100 tows to the closest RR service garage (250 mile round trip limit).

This thread should lead to some interesting responses. Most likely that 's the point, otherwise the OP would not have chosen a Jeep forum to post it.

Gotta love the internet.

Wow...

I knew there would be LOTS of Jeep fans on this Jeep site but...

The 2014 RR is brand new so there hasn't been ANY evidence that it is a POS or unreliable. And the 2014 Porsche is (finally) not nearly as ugly as previous models.

I'd love to add the 2014 SRT to this list but it doesn't deserve to be on it! While it's Onroad performance is great, it has NO Offroad ability; unlike both the Range Rover and Cayenne.

:slapfight:

To be, the ULTIMATE SUV has to do BOTH. The Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne fit that description. The SRT does not. Now... if Jeep/Chrysler was to add the Air Suspension system to the SRT...

Then, it could be considered one of the Ultimates. But that probably isn't going to happen.

And I currently own a 2012 V8 Overland. I'd buy the 2014 SRT in a heartbeat if it had Offroad ability.

If you're looking at both on-road and off-road performance in the same vehicle, you need an SUV with a transfer box (high and low gear range), which strikes the Cayenne out.

Now even better than the Range Rover Sport is the new Range Rover, which is more upscale, more modern, lighter and -therefore- quicker (5.4 for 0-60 instead of 6.2 for the RR Sport - both with the Supercharged V8).

To me that would be the ultimate in terms of luxury and on/off road versatility and prowess.

To those who claim "troll thread", I have a '14 SRT on order. It doesn't make me blind to the fact that the more pricey competition offers some very good SUVs... and the OP did not mention price as a factor...

EDIT: I just saw that my post compares the previous generation RR Sport (not the '14) to the current RR. Couldn't find out whether the new RR Sport has a transfer box, but it is quicker by 0.1s 0 to 60 (5.3s). I still prefer the "non-sport" RR...

I'm sorry, but that question is almost as bad as asking which Kardashian would make the best date.

Yes, there is an air suspension in the Cayenne, but not even Porsche calls it a 4 wheel drive, just an all wheel drive like the basic minivan. Two speed transfer case? $200 key fobs in body color?

The Range Rover or even Land Rover is not a bad vehicle, and with decent tires is pretty unstoppable--until it breaks.

If you want a truly ultimate on/off road SUV, go for the Mercedes Gelandewagen in performance options. Amazing how horsepower can triumph over the aerodynamics of a brick. If 4 wheels aren't enough, go for the 6 wheel hardcore version.

Or, just pick up a diesel or hemi GC and pocket the savings over all of these and keep up with any of them on or off road.

Re: Ultimate SUV: Range Rover Sport or Porsche Cayenne?

The Cayenne is OK, but it has been pretty much emasculated to bring weight down.
The Touareg sister used to have a better set-up, but that was the V10 diesel that is no longer available.

I tend to agree with Autoweek for SUVs: There ain't that many left, and it is pretty much limited to Jeep, Range/Land Rover, and Toyota.
