2012, 2013, or 2014 tech?
 
New to the forum. I've been reading hundreds of posts the past few days, and wanted to send thanks to everyone for all the great info and details!

Anyway, I've been eyeing the 2014 Limited V6 + LuxII + Adv Tech, but at the end of the day I'd rather not spend 40k. I'm aware of the major changes for 2014, but I'm wondering if I'd be just as happy with an older year that has the things I want. My question to everyone is how much have these features changed/improved:

- Blind Spot + Rear Cross-path Detection
- Backup camera / park sense
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Forward Collision detection
- Keyless N Go
- general steering wheel controls for radio/bluetooth/phone/etc

I'm a tech guy if you haven't noticed, and while I'm coming from an older car that has none of this, I'd rather spend $30k on a 2012 if most of these features are largely unchanged. I know people love the 8-spd tranny, digital instrumentation cluster, and the 8.4 inch screen, but a $8-10k difference may not be worth it to me.

I'd especially love to hear from people that have come from 2011-2012 models to 2013-2014, but all feedback is welcome! Thanks in advance!

I can't really answer your questions as I have a 2011 model but I totally get it! I love the 2014 too but I can't pay cash so I'm stuck with a payment. Used ones are really expensive in my area though so I would say if the difference is only 5-7 k go for the new model! If they hadn't changed packages I would've bought a new Laredo but you really have to get a limited to get any luxury options now, plus I can't handle the Laredo wheels this year. If I were you I'd test drive both and see which deal you feel better about... Honestly I don't think you can go wrong either way!

I just traded in my 2012 overland for a 2014 limited, so I can comment on some of the features you listed. Although to be honest, if these items in particular are your biggest concern, I would probably stick with a '12/13 since i dont think much has changed with them.

The backup camera has improved a bit. Of course the bigger screen helps, but now the guides lines that show up on the screen turn/curve with the actual turns of the jeep, where as the '12/'13 backup camera has stationary guide lines.

For the steering wheel, I believe all functionality is the same between the models, but of course there's a new design on the '14s. The 14's still have the buttons on the back of the wheel to control volume and stations.

Keyless N Go system seems the same to me.

Keyless N Go is a little different. The start button on the dash doesn't pop off to insert the fob's internal key to start the vehicle if the fob battery is dead. Instead, the fob has RFID, and you just put the fob against the button and press with it to start the vehicle.

I don't think you have to put the FOB near the button. I think as long as it is in range you can still start the vehicle. At least that how's it works in my 14 I can start the car with the keys in my pocket. I wonder how you would start the car of the FOB died.

According to what I have read, you use the valet key to unlock the driver door and then use the fob to push the button, it has a backup RFID chip.

That was the point of my post. I said "if the fob battery is dead". In that case it won't work from your pocket. The RFID range of the fob requires it to be very close to the start button.

I added a backup camera and a 7" tablet to mine & stuff like a cargo cover, sill guards, side steps, Torque provides a lot more diagnostics than the factory wants owners to know.

A Factory Service manual on CD is available for 2011-2013, it quite flawed but has information you can't find elsewhere (first owner's manual I saw that does not tell you how to change the air filter (engine or cabin)).

I traded in a 13 base limited for a 14 limited plus Lux II, RA4, and 20inch wheels.

The two cars are night and day honestly. The 8.4 screen makes a huge difference. And getting the 14 made me realize how old and outdated the 2013 was in technology and overall styling.

Edit: Just go and test drive both and play around with the tech and features. you'll know in a matter of minutes which one works for you.

I'm a bit of a tech junkie, too, but can't comment much on the difference between the '13 & '14 model. I did test drive both, though, when considering which to buy back in March and ultimately, the '14 Limited 4x4 won the battle. Mainly because of the 8-speed trans. It makes a huge difference in the overall drivability of the GC. And of course the larger screen, back-up camera with turn vector, etc. makes it nice, too. If it were me....the '14 would win.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I mean, it's no surprise that people would gravitate towards the newer model... but yeah hearing details about how the backup camera or the start button/key fob are different are details that I'm interested in knowing about. Sitting in both models will obviously be helpful, but some things you just don't notice until you're using them on a daily basis.
