4.7L Factory Synthetic Blend?
Hoping for some help here and couldn't find what I needed via search... I recently took my '05 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L to national tire store for an oil change. I bought a package of 5 oil changes for $70 which is far cheaper than doing it myself, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

The shop told me that my Jeep came with synthetic blend from the factory and that they would not put anything less in it. I bought the Jeep from a family member @ 30k miles and have put conventional the whole time. I pulled the book out and it only recommends 5w-30 and does not specify conventional, synthetic, or synthetic blend.

The shop's argument is that it came from the factory with the blend. Does anyone have any Jeep/Chrysler documentation that shows what oil my Jeep came with from the factory?

Thanks for the help!

Re: 4.7L Factory Synthetic Blend?
Are they saying that they want to charge more for the synthetic blend?

If not, I'd let them do it. It's not going to hurt anything.

If they are trying to charge you more now that you've bought the package by claiming they need to put a synthetic blend in, tell them you want what you paid for or your money back.

It DOES NOT come from the factory with a synthetic blend. Only the diesel and 6.4L hemi came with full synthetics. You shouldn't have to show them anything from Chrysler apart from the owners manual which does not call for a synthetic or synthetic blend.

Besides, the argument that they need to put in what it came with is ridiculous. Even if it did come with a synthetic or synthetic blend, the owners manual lists what is REQUIRED.

That shop is full of BS. Tell them to prove to you that the veh came from the factory with syn blend oil. I wouldn't trust them at all. Are they going to use Mopar filters or some cheapo filters that they buy in bulk? You have know way of knowing what oil they are putting in. It is probably coming out of a bulk oil container and you have no way of knowing what is actually in that container!!!!!!!!

Re: 4.7L Factory Synthetic Blend?
I agree that the the shop is full of BS. I have an '06 4.7L and the owners manual does not specify synthetic oil, just 5W30 that meets Chrysler MS-6395 spec which I bet they are not even aware. BTW, the spec does not mean synthetic oil.

I also would get a refund since it seems they are dishonest or dumb. Either way I wouldn't trust then to put in the correct grade of oil or a decent filter or even do the job properly like not stripping your drain plug etc.

It's establishments like that one that made me start doing my own mechanical work on my cars 42 years ago.

Re: 4.7L Factory Synthetic Blend?
I'm also curious about whether or not they want to charge you more on top of what you've already paid for the oil changes. If not, and they just were informing you that they were going to only use Syn-blend, that's perfectly fine. In fact, it's a better deal for you.

However, if they're trying to charge you more because they're claiming it's "required", ask them for a refund. They're either dumb or dishonest.
