Vinyl wrapped my door handles, mirrors, and roof rack rails...BUT...

IT LOOKED LIKE CRAP.

So a week ago I inquired with a place about having my door handles, mirrors, and roof rack rails wrapped in gloss black...they said they'd be able to do it, but to do it the 'right way' they'd have to pull the handles. I expressed concern with pulling the panels because the Jeep only has 1200 miles on it and I didn't want any rattles or vibrations as a result of pulling the panels. The manager of the shop reassured me that he's pulled panels on thousands of cars and has only had a couple come back, but in the end they were taken care.

I brought the Jeep in this morning...I had to call them an hour before they were scheduled to close to see if they were done (because it takes me about an hour to make it to the shop in traffic)...They said it was done and to come pick it up.

When I got there, the guy who wrapped my car (not the manager whom I initially spoke with) walks up to me...and we walk up to the car...where I am instantly disappointed. The guy tells me 'it was extremely difficult to wrap my handles without taking them off the door'. I asked him why he didn't pull them because I had discussed it with the manager earlier. He said 'oh well you mentioned you were worried about rattles'...Anyway long story short, they didn't pull the door handles off, so it looks like garbage.

1. Essentially around every edge of all four door handles where the vinyl needed to be cut, there was chrome exposed. The edge of the handle which touches the car looked like a 5 year old took a dull razor to the vinyl.

2. The vinyl on the door handles had various creases and air bubbles.

3. The edges of the mirrors where the vinyl was cut, same deal...chrome exposed and rough cuts.

4. The lower edge of the mirror had large creases to the point that if you rubbed your finger over them it was far from smooth.

5. Even the rack rails look like crap...rough cuts on the edges and a bunch of chrome exposed.

I'll work this out with the owner / manager of the shop, but just wanted to vent my frustration as it seems like some of you all have had much better luck with vinyl wrapping, or you're just not as OCD as I am. For the time being I took pictures of all the flaws, emailed the owner and am awaiting a response...

This whole vinyl wrap business is dumb.

As soon as the "manager" told me" we need to remove..." I would have said no thanks.

Look at fumanchu's wrap, that looks awsome!

Always look for a tint shop ths is either certified installers for 3M or Xpel, then check their work area should be clean and organized, that will tell you allot about that shop. If they dont want to show you their work area walk away.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience chukeer and I hope you get it all worked out, I also hope that the 5 year old with the dull blade did not carve some nice deep gouges on your chrome pieces.

I actually found this place through 3M's 'certified / preferred / premium' vinyl wrap vendor list. Their website did show a lot of the work they've done and I sent the owner pictures of the door handles, mirrors, and rack rail in my very first e-mail asking if this was something even possible to be done.

I peeled all the wrap off and the chrome wasn't damaged. The only remaining issues were with the drivers side trim on the front and rear doors.

The door trim for the front driver side door was not completely fastened, the trim around the door speaker wasnt aligned, and the wiring harness for the door lighting wasn't even plugged in...The rear door had the arm rest fastener screw, screwed into the door handle, and the door handle bolt screwed into the arm rest...Essentially a total lack attention.

The shop says they want to make it right, so that's good. After a discussion with the owner I'm expecting get a full refund on the wrapping.

Anyway here is a picture of how it looked from about 50+ feet away...actually looked decent. I think the lesson here is to just buy OEM door handles and find someone competent of installing them.

That does look good from a distance. Too bad Jeep has to force feed so much chrome with no de-chrome option on the upper trim models.

Oh that's terrible that they were certified installers and that you had a person that just did not know which way was up, I hope you get it all worked out.

You could try plasti-dipping them

Plasti dip works well on the chrome trim on the windows and roof rack.
