snow tires for wk2 summit, new rims?

So this seems to be something I need to plan ahead... I will need snow tires for the winter since I drive a lot to the mountains to ski at least 3 days a week as well as travel a lot to snowy cities in the winter to ski!

Most of the recommendation on the web is to go with a new set of rims for the winter, but at the same time most of the recommendations talk about "just get something for $200 the 4 of them... I don't think it's possible to find anything near this price also les schwab will do the work for you replacing the tires twice a year, so seems like buying either just the tires or tires+rims doesn't really have any added cost.

So the question is, should I plan on buying a new set of rims for my snow tires or should I just use the factory 20"? If I buy a new set of rims, will the 18" off-road overland rims+snow tires work on a 2014 summit or I would have to get 20"s? I'm planning on getting overland rims, I liked the design and also will give me some change once in a while...

I'm really going towards buying a new set of rims, but would like to hear the opinion from others, as well as to know what to buy, where to buy...

So any feedback is appreciated!

I always buy Rims and Tires together... not just a money thing but you will get more time out of your tires. If you use your existing Rims and swap back and forth that is six times each tire will get pulled around by a tire mounter over a period of 3 years.

If you have ever watched this process it is pretty hard on the beads and the tires in general. It would be much better with a mounted set for each season and will save you a huge amount of time each season change.

Of course most people will have paid for the rims in the extra change over time after the 3 years but sounds like that cost doesn't apply to you or did I missread?

"... 18" off-road overland rims+snow tires work on a 2014 summit..." is sure to be better than the 20" set. A 17" would be even better. The snow tire, whatever the rim, should have the same height as the original 20" tire. For snow tires, a high profile is better than a low profile.

That is right based on what a friend told me, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way, rims+tires seems a better choice for overall durability... not a money saver option but the best one if I can go for it!

when you compare height you are saying the total rim+tire height? so on a 18" the tire profile is higher than on a 20" considering the same total height of the combo? Did I get it right?

A 275/50-20, a 265/60-18 tire, a 245/70-17 and a 265/40-22 tire all have the same height of 30.5" within .1" or so. That's what matters. For snow tires, a narrow tire is best. So for winter, consider a 245/70-17 tire on a 17" wheel, which is likely to perform better than low-profile tire on a larger wheel.

Yes 18" rim with the snow tire is an excellent choice. This recommendation should be in good spec

Keep in mind that if you have a V8, you will have to use a rim that is 18" or bigger because of the size of the HD brakes.

it's a v8, maybe the overland 18" is the way to go! just need to find them cheap so I don't go live in the car!

Remember you can live in your car, but you can't drive a house. :)

Firestone Winterforces UV's Beast SUV tire has an actual tread.

anyone has any recommendation on where to find the Overland ORAII rims for a good price? Tried some dealers and web but couldn't find. Any idea how much those should cost?
