wireless keylock not working 2005 liberty

I have a 2005 Liberty Limited. Recently the wireless key fob quit working. In troubleshooting I discovered that both key fobs worked if you were right next to the driver door. I replaced the batteries in the key fobs but they still will only lock/unlock the doors when I am right next to the driver door. There must be a wireless receiver inside the vehicle but I don't know where it is or what might be wrong with it. Any ideas out there? Thanks!

Don't know if liberty is made in the same way as the WJ. On the WJ the keyless receiver is part of the passenger door module. It has a wire sticking out of the module, which acts as an antenna. Could be that the wire is loose. This same problem (short distance of remote range) happens on the WJ.

Some googling learned that the liberty is different. It seems that it has a combined sentry key/keyless entry receiver which is connected to the Body Control Module. It still has a wire antenna though, so have a look at that first.

Thanks for the advice. I will take a look at the BCM.
