Exterior Front Door Handles Removal?

Im working on some Leds for the door handle but im having a bit of trouble getting the front handles off. Anyone have any tips?

The rears were easy. 3 bolts with a 8mm and it pops right off. The front involves a lil more work. After the interior panels are off, i can see the 3 bolts holding the handle BUT it's impossible to get a socket there with the clamp holding the window.

Do you have to remove the window to get it out? My attempt was with the window up, i tried to remove the 5 bigger bolts around the frame holding the window regulator/window but got a bit nervous after the whole thing was loose and i had trouble getting it aligned back properly. I decided to call it off after an hr trying to get all the 5 bolts in place.

Anyone have any tips? Do i need to roll down the windows when doing this?

The window regulator and actuator rods have to come out first, then you should be able to access the three bolts in question.

Regulator comes out as follows:

1. Remove the trim panel from the inside of the front
door.
2. Position the watershield out of the way and using
the regulator, move the front door glass up or
down as required to access the two window regulator
glass clamp bolts.
3. Loosen the bolt in each of the window regulator
glass clamps far enough to release the door glass
from the clamps.
4. Disengage the door glass from the window regulator
glass clamps and lift the glass out of the regulator
clamps and into its full up position, then tape
the glass securely into place.
5. Remove the two bolts that secure the bottom of
the window regulator rails to the inside of the door.
6. Loosen the three bolts that secure the regulator
rails to the keyed holes on the inside of the
door.
7. Lift the regulator rails upward within the door far enough to disengage the bolts from the three keyed holes in the
door.
8. Lower the regulator rails within the door far enough to access and disconnect the wire harness connector from the regulator motor through the large access hole in the center of the door and remove the regulator.

I used a ratcheting wrench to remove my front handles.

Hopefully Svenska's method will work for you...looks a whole lot easier than the FSM directions!

Can't wait to see it complete.

So what did you wire these to? The interior lights? Or did you go to the power locks?

I've put exterior "all weather " led strips on front and they only seem to last one winter in the snow. I hope you have better luck with your leds.

I admit i like your mod better than the puddle lights.

tap into 2 wires underneath the steering column. A guy at JU did the same to his wk but puddle lights. Acts as the same as interior, pops up when unlocking door and slowly dims off when doors are shut.

Where did you get your strips? Mine are from oznium and they claim to be waterproof. The leds i use come in 2 kinds, one with the cover which im using, and one without the cover.(i had a pic of it before, it was a test run of a blue led)

The covers angle the LED light output sharper which i thought would look better than without the cover. It's been through a few rain showers and washes and seems to hold up well.

Im planning to do a writeup, VERY simple project, hardest part is the dam front handle removal lol.

I bought 2 different types of led strips from ebay vendors, my current set is from walmart and they are much brighter than the previous led strips.
