Making a trade tomorrow.

Since i dont have extra $ to buy a new sub woofer i am making a trade. I want a 10" so i am trading my Kicker CVR 12 to my friend for a mint JL 10W7 tomorrow on my lunch break.

For now i will run it with my ZX750i mono Kicker amp. I need to look up max rms and watts to make sure it will be ok first but i think it will be ok. At least until i can sell the Kicker Amp and buy a better amp for the Sub Woofer.

Once i get the new sub woofer i am going to start making my new box that will be as small as possible and fight tight up against the back seat LH corner (if looking in the cargo area).

Sub Specs. JL10W7 http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs.php?series_id=5

Free Air Resonance (Fs): 30.6 Hz Electrical “Q” (Qes): 0.578 Mechanical “Q” (Qms): 7.647 Total Speaker “Q” (Qts): 0.537 Equivalent Compliance (Vas): 1.28 cu. ft. / 36.1 liters One-Way, Linear Excursion (Xmax)*: 0.9 in. / 23 mm Reference Efficiency (no): 0.171% Efficiency (1W/1m)**: 84.3 dB SPL Effective Piston Area (Sd): 59.8 sq. in. / 0.0386 sq. m. DC Resistance (Re): 2.75 ohm Nominal Impedance (Znom): 3 ohm Thermal Power Handling (Pt): 750W Driver Displacement: 0.09 cu. ft. / 2.5 liters Net Weight: 30 lbs. / 13.6 kg

According to this chart the 10w7 will work with the 750w amp but it will be pushing it. Hopefully i can sell the amp and get a 300-500 watt amp to run the sub.

The next step will be building a box. That is where i am going to need help because i know nothing about JL Subwoofers.

I will keep the amp turned down but according to that chart once you go over 500w you are in the "danger zone" and i really dont want to blow a good sub. I will use it for now but i would like an amp better suited to the sub.

Power handling cannot be determined until the enclosure is built.

Keep the amp you have. The W7 isn't a terribly efficient driver, so power on tap is good.
Remember, it's a 3-ohm configuration, so it ill not be running at 2ohm/750w. It will be more in that 500w range.

BTW, smack your friend in the head after he trades you! He's getting hose in this trade, lol.

Well, today was a bust. I forgot to call my friend at lunch and he forgot to call me. I spoke to him later in the day and hes taking of for the weekend so i wont be able to get the Sub until Tuesday.

Matt, Can you help me out with figuring out the dimensions of the enclosure. I know its supposed to be between 1.75 and 2.0 Cuft but i guess these subs perform best with a rectangular port and i have no idea how to figure out how big to make it. I spoke to a local shop and they said its a bitch to figure out.

Also how do i set up my amp and wire up the sub to make it a 3ohm 500w?

Umm, never go to this shop again. An 8-year-old who can use the internet could design an enclosure for you.

I'll model it up (maybe not today 'cause I have a wedding in a little bit) and get you some different plots (sealed, vented (different tuning frequencies).

Also, port shape has zero to do with anything. Port area/volume/ do. But a rectangle port will be easiest to construct... but they don't look as aesthetically pleasing as a round port does.

You just wire the sub to the amp (same way you did your Kicker). Set your gain by ear.

Re: Making a trade tomorrow.

Thanks matt. I need the enclosure to be as space efficient as possible. I use the back of my jeep alot so as stealthy as possible. i have no ideas about dimensions for this sub but IIRC its a deep sub so that may pose a problem. Id like to have the sub up against the drivers side back of the seat in the corner.
