Trailer Tow Group IV - fluid coolers

I posted this thread with concerns regarding high engine oil temperatures while towing. I was attempting to research what additional fluid cooling was included with the Trailer Tow Group IV package found on the 5.7L HEMI platform. According to the manufacture description, the Trailer Tow Group IV package includes "HD engine cooling" but doesn't specify exactly what that entails. While searching on this forum it appears there's much confusion as to what accessory fluid coolers actually exist and which engine/drivetrain components are using them. So during an oil change I did some investigation and wanted to share my findings and evidence.

Vehicle - 2011 JGC Overland 4X4 5.7L HEMI with Trailer Tow Group IV package.
What I found on this model is the following:

  • A transmission fluid cooler exists. The cooling radiator appears to be shared with the AC condenser all in one enclosed unit. The top section appears to service the transmission while the bottom is used for AC coolant. The Transmission cooler lines exit the tranny on the passenger side where a combination of hard and soft lines interconnect the cooler.
  • An external 2-row power steering cooler exists. It's slapped onto the front of the AC condenser and is the forward most radiator on the front of the vehicle. You can visually see this unit through the front grill at the bottom of the radiator stack. The coolant lines run from the steering box to the fluid cooler a short distance up the driver side.
  • No engine oil cooler appears to exist. No additional fluid cooling lines were observed entering/departing the radiator stack and no oil filter sandwich adapter is present (like with the 6.4L HEMI).

This information supports the data statistics I collected during heavy towing. Transmission temp, even with heavy loads, got hot but never outside the tolerance of acceptable operation. Same with engine coolant temperature - hot but acceptable. Engine Oil temperature however, has a tendency to sky rocket as the motor builds heat. With no engine oil cooler, there's no way to release the heat and the engine has to rely on coolant (water) for general cooling.

My personal conclusion is that I'm going to be installing an engine oil cooler so that I can continue to use by JGC for towing. There are no "kits" specific to the JGC so a custom install of a universal kit will be required. Wish me luck!

Re: Trailer Tow Group IV - fluid coolers

I emailed Jeep while I was waiting for mine to be built. According to them the additional cooling is a tranny cooler and an oversized radiator.

Other vehicles I've owned used larger radiators when you ordered the tow package. I don't think I ever had an engine oil cooler.

You know, I read your thread where you questioned the temps. Then I looked into it, then I forgot about it. You are absolutely correct; there is no oil cooler. I was surprised there was a steering fluid cooler but not an oil cooler!
Anyway, I would be interested to find out if the 6.4 cooler is a bolt on modification to the 5.7. That would be very nice if so. I much prefer liquid cooled oil coolers over the air cooled ones. Good on ya for scoping all that out!

Well this is very disturbing.

On my build sheet for my 2012 it clearly states:

NHAP Engine Oil Cooler

I have a 2012 Summit V8 with the Trailer Tow package also.

If the Jeep isn't equipped with an oil cooler, but was advertised that it comes with one and it's on the build sheet wouldn't Jeep owe us all with this configuration an oil cooler?

This reminds me of the 20GB radio situation where some Jeeps were advertised as coming with a 20GB NAV radio, but shipped with 10GB drives.

Mine (in my Wrangler) was swapped out for this reason after I complained.

My 2012 Summit w/the Hemi V8 and Group IV trailer tow has sales codes for;

NMCP (Heavy Duty Engine Cooling)
AHXP (Trailer Tow Group IV)

No mention of an oil cooler? Do you have a 6 cylinder engine?
The NHAP oil cooler sales code is for a 3.6L V6 in a Wrangler!

You find it disturbing, but did you try, on your own vehicle, to find an oil cooler? That should probably be one step before being disturbed. ;)

That's for the 3.6L V6 and the 6.4L V8 (SRT). Neither of which apply to the subject of this thread; 5.8L HEMI engine oil cooler w/Trailer Tow Group IV package.

I thought about that but if you look at the oil filter receiver on the 5.8L it has this integrated drip shield that appears to be cast as part of the actual block. I think the drip shield would definitely interfere with the 6.4L cooler and if it's part of the block, there's no removing it.

Now I find this all interesting. According to my build sheet:
EZH 5.7 V8 Hemi MDS VVT Engine

and

NHAP Engine Oil Cooler

Curious as to where it is.

5.8L? Well the title of the thread is "Trailer Tow Group IV - fluid coolers"... but not a problem, I deleted the post and information... I thought that since someone was asking about fitting the 6.4L cooler to a 5.7L that I would show images of what the different oil coolers looked like, as well as re-confirming that there is no oil cooler on the 5.7L.

The "Trailer Tow Group IV" package is not available in either of those two power trains. The 3.6L has a basic tow package which doesn't include the "HD engine cooling" and the 6.4L, who knows as that's a completely different sub-forum.

Trailer Tow Group IV is currently available with all powertrains, including the 3.6L w/HD engine cooling.
