4x2 or 4x4 for family camping? no trailer

hi,

I'm thinking about buying Jeep GC Limited or Overland '14 for the first time ( first time in Jeep). Can't decide which 4x2 or 4x4. I'm going to take GC for family camping (nationals parks and local trail parks). I won't be attaching a trailer or a boat. Just GC around the country.

My main concern is rainy day. I really don't want to be stuck in the mud and can't get out of it when my family is in the car...

Will 4x2 have enough power since I do not going for heavy off road adventure.

Is there a significant difference in gas mileages 4x2 vs 4x4?

Any thoughts? welcome:)

I personally do not see the point of a JGC without 4WD. Seems like sacrilege or something.......

Consider whether you plan on going over rocks, in the mud, sand or snow. If you answer yes, then 4x4 is not a bad idea.

Personal opinion: Jeeps must be 4x4, period!

Having said that, I will still recommend a 4x4 because it is a Jeep. :D
Yes, I am not much of help here.

Cheers,

Check the places you plan on going via the internet. If you see a lot of family sedans in the pictures, you don't need 4x4 to get down the trails. But if you want to expand your horizons, like driving to a favorite fishing spot, and diving right to the waters edge, you might like having the added capability.

I'm not a Jeep purist and I buy my vehicles for me, not the next guy. Therefore I don't worry about trade-in values.

I got my first 4x4 to haul a boat. But we did start finding great places that would have been a real challenge without it.

Jeeps should be 4x4. You will find the v6 4x4 to be decently fuel efficient. I got 25.5 overall fuel economy on a 4000 mile trip in an 8 state loop including lots of mountains and 4 nat'l parks.

I take it you are from a southern state with sunshine and no snow. Otherwise you would not be considering 4x2. If you want to expand horizons, winters, mountains and snow is the way to go. Which means you should just get the 4x4.

Depends on where you live. For instance, I doubt if you could even buy a 4X2 in Colorado. Resale has to be taken into consideration and a 4x4 will be worth more in Colorado than it would be in LA.

There are a bunch of Overland 4x2's on lots in Colorado. I didn't check for other trim levels. If somebody will buy them new, somebody will also buy them used. True a 4x4 will be worth more, but it also costs more.

I personally would never buy a Jeep without a 4x4, but I like off-roading.

4x2 is likely adequate for what you want and would be a small percentage (6%?) better in fuel economy.

But, why not just get the 4x4 and then do a little more off-roading in the comfort of knowing you have it?

I'll Never buy anything but 4x4.

even if you don't off road the traction and safety benefits are great!.

the JGC will never spin the tires in the rain just 4 wheels powered all the time hydro planing is less

I mean you don't have to get ORA1 or ORA2.

Just get all weather package it is a single stage 4x4 that will do more than you think!

If you need to decide then get the 4x4. I have a 4x2 because I live in Florida and is all I need or want. Anywhere there is up and down or snow and ice then the Jeep 4x4 is as good as any in the world.

It is better to have and not need than to need and not have.

I also have AAA century plus.

"It is better to have and not need than to need and not have."

I think there is your answer. It's been pretty wet here in the south this year. Pull into a nice campsite in the afternoon and by the next morning it's a sucking mud hole.

I've got an '11 4x4 and a '14 4x2 and I would not consider the difference in mileage "significant". In fact, I'm seeing about the same mileage on both for our normal running around town driving. Out on the highway the 4x2 gets between 1 and 2 mpg more than the 4x4.....according to the EVICs in both.
