1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.9

A couple months back I purchased a WK SRT8 locally and love it. Not to be outdone my brother purchased a 98 5.9 yesterday. We flew out of Louisville and picked it up in Phoenix. We are in the process of driving it across the country back to Lousiville.

I'll post photos when we get back, but so far I'm pretty jealous. His 98 5.9 is in better shape and has less miles than my SRT8. This ZJ feels like it was in a time capsule.

Wish us luck. Driving an unknown 15 year old used car across the the country is something we've never tried.

We've covered 18 of the 26 hours of driving and everything checks out so far. 8 hours left. The 5.9 has 60,000 miles on it with original Goodyear Wrangler HP's, so there was some concern about the integrity of 15 year old tires through the 105 degree desert at interstate speed, but they've held up.

This 5.9 also has factory chrome wheels, possibly 1 of 30 from 1998.

We are averaging 17MPG with an average speed of 75MPH, and will use over 100 gallons of 91-93 octane by the time we get home. Only 3 states left today.

Extremely happy with the condition of the car. If you can find a garage kept car in the southwest, they seem to be a good buy. A vehicle of similar age in the rust belt would be rusted out. We've had a couple of Jeeps that we've taken really good care of, but they still rust out after a decade of winter roads covered in salt.

Very cool! We had a 5.9 that we sold to get our SRT. Should have just kept them both, that was an awesome Jeep. :(

Have some spare 5.9 stuff in the F/S section and more in the garage going up for sale also.

I'll certainly check out the 5.9 goodies you have for sale.

We completed our 3 day journey about 3 hours ago. 2,000 miles and 28 hours in the 5.9. We averaged 17MPG even though we broke 90MPH a couple of times. Our family still owns the 94 ZJ we had when I was growing up and we use it as a daily driver, so the 5.9 was always something we wanted the second we saw it back in the day. This past Friday was the 1st time I've ever got to drive or ride in one, and this one still impressive even after I've driven my SRT8 WK.

On a side note, not sure I would recommend driving an older car like this across the country without having a full inspection performed before you begin. As I mentioned in my 2nd post the tires were suspect, and we found what you see in the photo below when my brother pulled the front right wheel off. Everything else on the car is pristine. The underbody looks brand new.

Looking forward to running the two side by side. I own a XJ as a daily driver and needless to say the 5.9 destroyed it.

Here are some more pics of the new 5.9 as he's doing work on it. Turns out it has new brakes on it, ball joints are in good shape, and the underside looks fantastic. He already took the grand paw side steps off.

Here are some photos of the mint under body and the chrome wheels that are cleaning up nicely. The stock exhaust that comes crushed from the factory will need some work. My XJ has a similar crushed section right after the headers. Not sure why they couldn't come up with another solution.
