A/C compressor clutch not working
Hello to everyone from New Mexico. My a/c stopped working suddenly today, and the compressor isn't turning. I checked the fuse and relay in the PDC, jumped the low pressure switch, and confirmed 12-13 v. @ the compressor clutch.

Is it safe to say the a/c clutch is my culprit? Should I try energizing it direct from the battery to confirm or...???? Any help or suggestions from the WJ Gurus here is greatly appreciated.

Re: A/C compressor clutch not working
I would say yes, your compressor clutch is faulty. You did all the trouble shooting already and when there is 12 V at the clutch connector and the clutch doesn't engage, then that is the only possibility.
The clutch could be changed separately, but if you still have the original compressor, you probably could better change the whole unit.

Thanks for your reply, that's what I figured but with all the electronics and sensors, it's better to get another opinion.

Thanks again.

So, strange works perfectly today (so far)...impending clutch failure ? Thermal reset ?

Nothing worse than an intermittent problem...HA!

Re: A/C compressor clutch not working
When it is intermittent, it is probably more wiring or sensor related. Those intermittent problems are always nice to solve:rolleyes:.

Re: A/C compressor clutch not working
Don't read too much into it, I just replaced an A/C compressor on a 4.7l dakota last week that took a couple trips of the customer running over here when it was acting up so I could actually see the problem. The clutch was not engaging intermittently.

Like frank said, you already did the diagnosis when it was not working (exactly when you want to do it). If, at that time, you had power to the clutch and it was not engaged, replace the compressor. From what I have seen cost wise the entire compressor is not much more expensive than a clutch kit for one the ONLY perk is that you don't have to evac and recharge the system to replace the clutch.

Re: A/C compressor clutch not working
Resolution; I went with my gut instinct and replaced the clutch only. Cold as ice now.
