factory paint defect?

I have a 2014 granite crystal gc,i seen it in just the right light and it looks splotchy, almost camo of different shades of light and dark gray but in bright light it looks fine,is this normal,is anyone elses like this,

p.s I bought it brand new and all the panels are like this

I noticed that too. I thought/think it was a result of the flake/crystal in the paint, the sun hitting at various angles and the need for a good buff / wax to clean up the typical new factory imperfections.

I've seen the variations on two on my dealers lot. Metallics will do that if they are not applied correctly. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do because the finish in clear coated. If you buff it you are only buffing the clear coat.

Re: factory paint defect?

That is the way lots of new cars are coming these days. Like another poster states it is a by product of a not so correct spray process. It's not exclusive of a Chrysler problem. I'm not saying its right bit it was a gripe of my 2012 OS in Mineral Gray. Not to sound sarcastic or condesnding towards Chryco but if that is the only issue with your Jeep than I would consider myself lucky. Annoying especially in conditions other than good sun but Lucky. You can read my issues and see what I mean. You can take it to the dealer and document. I have heard of at least one person who had luck with the dealer sending it out to a body shop that was able to buff out a similar issue do to overspray or something like that.

If they all look that way wouldn't it be a feature and not a defect. I think it looks cool the pattern is very consistent not like a error at all more like they were trying to catch the light from different angles. I looked a 4 Granite crystal jeeps when I bought my overland and they all looked the same if it isa defect they are very good at doing it

Re: factory paint defect?

Just picked up my 14 GC Limited, paint is the same way. Under direct sunlight looks great with a lot of flake. Under clouds or overcast can see shading in paint. Dealer had two on the lot both the same way.

Wife had a VW in silver that was the same way, with a year you could not even tell.

I would just leave it, think it looks cool.

I have a similar paint imperfection on my 2012 MG JC as well. I tried polishing/buffing and it did not go away. I now call it my Jeep's birthmark... and live with it. :)

Cheers,

Same thing on my '14 GC, like it could have used a few more coats of color before the clea was applied. Living with it as well, still a great rig!:D

Same here, most pronounced on the hood. Shows up really well when wearing polarized glasses... Jeep is max steel.
