05 Hemi Transmission
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 liter hemi. About twice a week when I first shift into drive there is hesitation before it in gauges. This morning the pause was a lot longer and then once it kicked in and I started to drive the cel came on. Then the transmission got stuck in 3rd gear. I guess this is a "limp mode". I let it sit for a few hours and then drove it to get the light checked. It drove fine but the cel was still on. It had 2 codes on it. p0700 and p0876. The fluid was at the right level and was changed out about 15000 miles ago. I have 110,000 on the jeep. Any ideas where to start? Is it gonna hurt to drive it? Looks like it could be solenoid but I am wandering if it is worth trying to fix myself or I just need to take it somewhere. Thanks for the help.

Re: 05 Hemi Transmission
Sounds like the spin-on filter may have a worn out seal, allowing the torque converter to drain over time.

If you have never had the filters replaced, it is possible you have one that was from a bad batch years ago (if you search for TSBs related to the 2005's you'll see it describes your symptoms quite well). If you recently had it serviced it may not have been done correctly.

That's where I would start.

Re: 05 Hemi Transmission
Found it:

TSB 21-007-06 addrresses an issue with delayed engagement with the 545RFE transmission.

The customer may experience an initial delayed shift engagement following an extended
off (not running) period of time, generally after being parked overnight. The initial shift
engagement may feel like a delay or slip when a transmission gear (reverse or drive) is
first selected after engine start.
The customer may also experience a MIL illumination. Investigation may determine that
the MIL is due to one or more of the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's):

P0868 - Line Pressure Low.

This DTC will be the most frequently occurring DTC for

the delayed shift condition.
P0944 - Loss Of Hydraulic Pump Prime.
P0731 - Gear Ratio Error In 1st.
P0736 - Gear Ratio Error In Reverse.
P0841 - LR Pressure Switch Rationality.
P0876 - UD Pressure Switch Rationality.

The delayed engagement and MIL condition (DTC's) may be caused by a suspect transmission cooler return filter with a part number of 04799662AB. A suspect cooler return filter may cause the transmission sump filter to split at its plastic-to-metal crimp. If the transmission sump filter becomes split at the crimp, then one

or more of the above DTC's may also occur.

Re: 05 Hemi Transmission
Just want to add a little more to what Doc said. "P0700 is an informational code only. It doesn't point to a direct fault in the engine, only a general fault in the transmission. More diagnosis is necessary to identify what the transmission fault is. This requires a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission module."

I would definitely address the filter issue(s) first. Also, like Doc says, it could be the main filter has split it's side....a fairly common issue with the 545RFE. After you've looked into that, let's see what happens.
