Dropped a valve seat, need a motor!
 
Hi all,

Long story short, my Hemi dropped a valve seat and destroyed a cylinder/piston so I think I'm gonna need a new motor. I'm weighing my options but I wanted to see where you guys recommend me looking for one. Stock or built, I'm just looking for something reliable and with a good warranty. Nothing used unless it has a good warranty. Where should I look other than the Dealer? Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but this problem seems to becoming more and more common. How many miles were on the engine? What were the circumstances that led up to it....putting around town, hot rodding, etc?

As far a where to buy an engine if your concern is warranty, I'd try to find something local. That way, if you had a problem, you wouldn't be dealing with some outfit long distance. I think if it were me, I'd look to one of the more reputable sites on the internet. If low mile used is OK, Cleveland Pick a Part is a good start, but I've never had a warranty issue with them. There are also some MOPAR sites that are on the west coast (CA, OR) that offer both short and long blocks. If you're into modding, now would be a good time to get a good forged engine too. I know if I ever have a problem, I'll be going with a forged 5.7 based (probably using 6.1 or 6.4 components), with ported Eagle heads, intake manifold, and the cam I am now using, which retains MDS. With a good exhaust, that should throw down around 400 rwhp and deliver better fuel economy than I am already getting......~22 mpg, highway, almost never under 20.

Yeah, I'm considering going forged, but I've also got a subaru with a blown motor right now that I'm rebuilding and it's gonna be hard to justify two project cars!

I don't have the car with me right now so I don't know the precise number but somewhere in the neighborhood of 108k miles and it occurred when I stopped the vehicle to unload and then tried to restart. It was not under high loading conditions and the vehicle was not moving.

WOW!! When it rains, it pours. Was it a timing belt that lunched the Subaru? Interesting, how the Jeep failed. I think that's how most of them have happened that I have heard of. I also think most were early models. I've got a 05 Hemi LX, and I hope it doesn't let go. It's only got 58K on it though. It's mostly my long trip vehicle.

Let us know what you end up doing.

The earlier 03-04's mostly the Rams seem ok, for some reason 05's are prone as I was reading in the LX world that the metal for the seats changed at one point. Don't quote me but the press fit is about 3 thou over and if the vehicle has had overheating issues then the chances seem to be higher, and it has happened after a warm engine has been turned off then restarted 10 or so minutes later (Bingo). If getting your heads done you can ask for a tighter tolerance for the fittment like 5 thou which is what the Hemi Gurus suggest. Sorry for your troubles, I run the 180 stat in my 05 to keep things cooler and in my 03 I added a black magic 180 e-fan and both vehicles have heat extraction built into the Hoods.

Yeah, confirmed today with a scope that its a valve seat that dropped and there is material embedded everywhere in the cylinder. Called the dealer and they said the same thing happened to a police vehicle recently and they just dropped in a remanufactured motor ($8k after labor). My local head reworker said that's the most common problem for the hemis. That and broken valve springs. I

I'm still weighing my options but I definitely don't have funds to do a full motor replacement right now.

Heads are supposed to come off today. My mechanic had some emergencies last week that prevented them from opening it up sooner. We're gonna look at the extent of the damage and see what's the cheapest way to get it running. If it looks bad enough to require the cylinders to be reworked, I'll strongly consider boring it out and doing some upgrades. Otherwise the priority is just to get it running again.

Looks like I'll need a new long block. I'll post pictures later so you can see the damage. I was quite surprised that the valve seat just shattered into pieces. I'm guessing it was not billet, cast or forged, but some type of powdered metal.
