Clicking noise - watch this video - any ideas?

1 Attachment(s)
Iíve read a few other threads describing clicking noises suggesting transmission, suspension, or other reasons as causesÖ I know there are supposedly "normal" clicking sounds that come with the 8-speed transmission.

I've got a new 2014 GC Limited which is making the clicking noise in the attached video. (The video quality is not great. Iím recording it with my phone holding it out the driver's window.)

It is best heard at lower speeds inside a parking garage, where you can hear the echo off the walls if the window is down. (But I can hear it when driving outside too, when the window is down at slower speeds, up to about 35 mph. At faster or highway speeds, there's too much vehicle sound to still hear it.)

It seems to be coming from the front driver's side, and is rotational - faster clicking when the car is going faster, slower clicking when slower. It seems to be worse when I'm turning to the right, but I also hear it when going straight. It seems to be faint when turning left, though that's not heard as well on the video. There seems to be no correlation with shifting or what gear it is in.

Iíve had it back to the dealer THREE times and they canít reproduce it or figure it out. On the second visit I did point it out to a technician who definitely acknowledged it, but then apparently couldnít reproduce it. On this third service visit, they ďremoved both front wheels, rotors, calipers, cleaned and tightened all bolts. Tightened axel nuts on both sides, reinstalled calipers, rotors, tires.Ē

Iím rather dissatisfied with their service, but I do think the noise is most noticeable after the vehicle has warmed up, so if one starts it up after being parked and tries to hear it immediately, it is not present, or at least far less noticeable.

Anybody experiencing this or have any thoughts?

Thanks.

You've probably already checked this, but it reminds me of the kind of sound you hear when you have something stuck in the tire, such as a stone in the tread, or a piece of metal in the rubber. Sometimes you can have a piece of metal in the tire and it's extremely hard to find. That has happened to me, ended up being a screw with the head broken off. Good luck, hope you solve the mystery.

That could happen if the object stuck in the tire is close to the edge of the tread near the sidewall. But you're right, it is pretty strange. Took my tire guy a while to find the screw, and he had to take the tire off to do it. Water tested it and couldn't find a leak, but the screw actually penetrated the tire and he found it poking through on the inside.

Thanks for the responses.

I've been hearing this for about 6 weeks and have checked out the tire pretty carefully. As has the dealer mechanic x 3. (But I can imagine an imbedded piece of metal being pretty inconspicuous.)

But it doesn't seem to always make the click, and doesn't seem as apparent when it's being first started and driven after sitting overnight...

I hadn't thought about fuel pump. I wondered if a CV joint or other drive-shaft issue could explain it?

Big thanks to Scott18 who mentioned he was having a similar sound when his rim was bent. Probably going to investigate that next...

I have a new 6-19-14 bod jgc, and thx to this, and the other thread I have this rotational clicking as well. so hopefully everybody has this, and it's just not that noticeable and hopefully normal. I know I had no idea before I saw this thread of the issue/sound, and I would like to think I'm pretty good at unusual sounds coming from my vehicles.
