00 grand cherokee awd problems? need help!

I have the all wheel drive model jeep. The other day when I took off from a dead stop on dirt the back tire spun so the front tires ingaged and that when I heard a bang and now the awd don't work! I put it in 4 wheel low and still no a wheel. It drives fine but whatever ingages it into 4 wheel is not working any ideas before I go buying parts??

Is it a Quadra Trac or Quadra Drive?

Its the quadra track

It sounded like something popped or snapped

It can be that the chain broke inside the T-case, a problem inside the front differential or the front propeller shaft.
Jack up one front wheel and spin the wheel whats in the air. If you see the prop shaft turning, the front diff and prop shaft are ok and the problem is inside the T-case. If the prop shaft doesn't turn, then its probably the front diff.

Thanks so much!! Im going to try that asap! If its the t-case chain how hard is that to change? Or am I better off just swapping out the t-case? Thanks again for your input!

I have never opened my T-case, but it can be split. There is a change that some other internal damage has occured, so only by opening it up you will know more.
Probably easier to get a good junkyard part. You could then even decide to go for a NV242 T-case, which give you full time 4x2, 4x4 or 4x4 Lo. (you have now a NV 247 T-case, which has a progressive coupling inside, which transfers torque to the front wheels when a speed difference exists between front and rear propeller shafts)

I love my jeep but I hate my t-case! If I changed it I would also have to change front diff? Or the hole front end?

No, the diff doesn't change. But you probably will need other propeller shafts and an other shifter assy in the cabin, because it has different positions. Probably can be purchased as a set from the junkyard.
But first confirm if the problem is really the T-case, or something else.

Great thanks!!

So I jacked up the front tire and it spins freely and makes clicking noise! I also put it in 4low and spun the tire and it spins freely

troy tompkins 08-08-2013 11:38 AM

Also when I put it in 4low if feels like it is in 4low but the front tires don't grab wich tells me its in my front diff right?
