2014 GC Limited Backing Up Steep Hill

I am the new owner of a 2014 GC 3.6L (traded in our old friend 2002 4.7). Our summer lake house has a very steep driveway and we always back into it. Every SUV we have owned has negociated this hill with no issue. including an 05 Toyota Higlander. Our new Jeep with the fancy Quadra Trac II will not do it easily unless it is in low range. This makes no sense to me. It's a Jeep for crying out loud and all reviews talk about what a true off roader this vehicle is.

The dealer says that it is the torque management routine in the ECU that is limiting the available torque to the transmssion. That does explain what is happening. The vehicle just stops moving and no amount of throttle will move it.

What can be done to get around this? I am seeing some threads about defeating Torque Management on older models. Is this possilbe in the 2014's. I would prefer not to use Low Range since the driveway is paved and based on previous vehicles I just should not have to.

Otherwise the GC is great supper mileage and lots of luxury

Thoughts?

It's a paved driveway? No wheel spin? Very odd. Does it feel like the computer is pulling ppower? Have you tried it with the traction controll off?

I have tried about every combination of setting availble. with TC and Eco off. Yes the drive is paved. it feels like the "transmission is slipping" ie torque converter is not transmitting torque. If I stop on the steepest part of the hill the vehicle will not move no matter how much throttle I give it.
I could do anything with my 02 4.7 on that hill and it would not be phased. No wheel spin

Trade it for a 5.7??? LOL I wish I had an answer but I haven't even test driven the V6's

Interested to hear more about this, considering I'm a 3.6L owner myself.

Out of curiosity, does it do any better going forward compared to reverse?

Does much better going forward. Unfortunately I don't have a "go forward" option at this location. Point is the 2014 3.6L has 70 more HP's than the 02 and abt 40 more ft lbs of torque than the 02. Yes it's heavier but like I said this is not an extreme off road situation. My cousins 09 RAV 4 does it with no problem and a Jeep can't....Really?

Is the engine screaming when you are trying to do this or just loaded like when you brake torque it?

Is the computer keeping the engine from revving higher? If the engine is not being restricted and the car is not moving, my guess there is a defect, not a programming problem.

I certainly wouldn't take one dealers word on this, or even one rep from Jeep.

I can't believe it is a engine torque issue it has to be a software problem. I know people like to bust on the V6 I find it to be very torquey for a V6 and mine has no problem throwing around my 5000lb Jeep with easy. I wish I had a really steep hill around here I would go back up it for you..

Be careful. On Ford 4R100 trannys, which are used in the SuperDuty trucks, prolonged backing up under heavy loads can overheat components and cause damage. Many tow vehicles failed in remote campsites while backing RVs up a hill.

It is possible that this is true with the ZF as well. Why else would torque limiting occur?

Take a video of it and put it on youtube under jeep fail. Maybe that will get a response from jeep.

Good comments. To Supertech30...The engine races some load but not like torque throttling. I am new to posting on forums but will try to post photos or video this weekend.
