0W40 Oil Wear After 5000 Miles

1 Attachment(s)
I decided to analyze my oil after i changed it today. My last oil change was ay 14700 miles and today's change came at 19800. I took a sample of the fresh oil i was putting in and compared it to the used oil i was taking out. Mobil 1 0W40 fully synthetic. The oil going in fresh tested at a viscocity of 10.2 cst which is near the mid range of a 30 weight oil. The used oil after 5000 miles came out at 9.1 cst or at the low end of a thirty weight oil. I was a little surprised by two things.

1. That the fresh oil came out so long on the viscosity index.
2. That the oil only really degraded about 10 percent over its "useful" life.

I haven't thought too much about that. I am considering testing some other 0w40 brands to try to pick up the viscosity. I am also considering doing a blend for my next change. I will be more than happy to keep everyone posted on the wear and tear of the oil. I didn't see anything alarming, no metal etc.

Possible to do a test for Red Line 0W40? :)

considered an actual analysis? which would provide much more info about the actual condition of the oil

I could definitely take a look. Unfortunately the only 0w40 available at the shops where I live is Mobil 1 fully synthetic. I mean its a great brand but i lack the accessibility of other oils, especially things like redline. Maybe next time I order something I'll have them throw some redline in.

I didn't plan on going too deep into the analysis. The equipment in my lab really isn't designed for those variety of tests and it would require me to send it out. I do however plan on possibly investigating other brands to see which one holds up better over time. I will likely do my next change with something other than Mobil 1.
