Violent Cronic Clunking - Rear End
WK is at the shop today... rear pinion seal, crank seal, spark plugs, wheel bearing, and transmission fluid/filter change.
Last night, I was driving home about 25mph through the neightborhood and all of a sudden it sounded like a screaming person under the rear end... high pitched squelch. Almost like squelch for brake pads but not the same... it was rotational... then it went away completely... returned a few hundred yards later. This morning on the way to the shop, nothing. Traveling 70MPH down the highway... nothing... then loud violent clunking in the rear end... Like someone was hitting the bottom of the Jeep with a hammer! I changed lanes, and it went away.
Re: Violent Cronic Clunking - Rear End
A similar thing happened to my 1998 Jeep GC. I turned a cornor and all at once it seemed like a blown tire with the tread flapping. Stopped looked but couldn't see anything wrong. Drove home another 5 miles and everything was fine. Stopped by my local garage and we took it for a about a 5 mile drive and nothing. Turned around and all at once it clunked a few times like something hitting an exhaust pipe and then quiet. They put it on the rack and nothing obivious. But the servce manager saw a couple pices of brake dust by one rear wheel. They pulled the wheel and found the emergency brake band came lose from its mounting and might have been trying to turn within the drum and then would catch. They pulled the brake band out, put wheel back on and all was well except no emergency brake. So this could be your problem. Symptoms seem the same as mine but that was maybe in about 2005 as I traded it for a new 2006 GC Limited shortly after. Al
