Fuel Mileage Problem

I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7 FWD.

I have been getting terrible fuel mileage, especially in town. on a good tank of gas I may get 12-14 miles to a gallon town driving.

I hate to admit that I have been neglecting this issue, I thought that it was were the four wheel drive was basicly on demand cause you dont have to put it into 4-wheel drive, thought this was causing it to eat more gas.

I was speaking to a work buddy yesterday and he said I had something definitely wrong that I should be getting better fuel mileage than that thru town.

I have been putting fuel treatment at every oil change and was going to change the fuel filter but the guy at auto parts store said that all this jeep had was a little screen filter in the fuel tank. I havent changed the spark plugs yet cause all I have is approx: 52,000 miles on this jeep.

Does anyone have any advise at all what could be causing the poor fuel mileage?

Thanks alot

Re: Fuel Mileage Problem

First, are you relying on the EVIC to computer your gas mileage, or are you actually calculating based on how much fuel you put in? The EVIC calculations aren't always the greatest. That being said, the EPA estimate for city driving for the 3.7L is 15MPG...so it sounds like things are about where they should be - especially with the AC on and driving style it's not unusual to get values an MPG or two below EPA estimates.

It's a heavy vehicle and that 3.7L struggles to get it going, so you get poor gas mileage.

As an aside - the acronym FWD is typically used for Front Wheel Drive vehicles...you have a 4WD/AWD

sounds like what im getting and I have 63xxx miles, but im religious about maintenance. the plugs should be changed at 30k intervals so if you are not sure on there condition the go ahead and swap them

mine don't struggle no more..:D, I also forgot to mention that the front o2 sensors can cause bad fuel mileage when they get lazy
