Bluetooth Feature Request for Uconnect 8.4A(N)
So I hear one of the Uconnect developers is a member hear, cool. I hope he could read this and add it to their future feature list.
This has been a problem in Every Bluetooth Radio and it seems to me fairly easy to address.
Smart phones are getting smarter and smarter and will probably always be ahead of Car Based systems.
Even if the Smartphone and Car Radio features are equal most of us don't want to pay double for services. And if it's between the Car and the Smartphone people will choose to pay for their Smartphone services.
So I want my phone connected for it's services.
Now if I'm streaming audio from the SmartPhone this is not an issue. The phone itself will switch services that drive Audio as needed (i.e. Nav commands while listening to Music).
There are many services on the Smartphone that have Audio associated with them that don't involve Stream Music.
But I want to listen to Radio, XM, or USB from the UConnect, but still hear other (on demand) audio services from the phone.
For Example Navigation, Traffic Alerts, Waze, Advanced Radar Apps, ODB Monitoring Apps, Weather Warnings.
I can't get any of those if I wish to listen to the Radio/USB of the car !!!
Why? because they are automatically routed to the Bluetooth Media and if that Bluetooth is not EXCLUSIVELY selected on the Uconnect, you won't hear anything.
You won't even hear the built in Speaker of the Smartphone, because most phones automatically divert ALL (Media) Audio to the Bluetooth when it goes active (when you start you car).
This is so frustrating. When my wife got her new VW CC, she kept on saying she can no longer hear her Navigation Announcements on her phone. Duh, her phone is paired and it was going to the Bluetooth Channel on her Radio.
Luckily, on her phone I can shut off Bluetooth Media only (Keep the Phone Audio On) and she can at least hear her phone IF she keeps her Radio low or Off. It also STAYS off.
The Jeep/HTC One is Worse. It turns Bluetooth Media BACK ON every time you start. Googling this issue, tons of people have the same issue on many many phones. That Bluetooth Media won't stay off. Point is, it really should NOT have to be turned off if the Radio was smarter.
Can you please add an option switch to the Bluetooth Media Channel when it has active content !!!
I don't know if in the Case of Sparse Blue Tooth Transmissions (e.g. Navigation Commands) if that's a Constant Stream or On Demand (or bursts). If it is On Demand then if the Radio sees it go Active Switch to it temporary, then switch back when it goes idle.
In other words do exactly what you do for the PHONE over Bluetooth.
When a call comes in, you mute the current Audio and switch to the phone stream. When the phone call is done you switch back.
Do the same thing with the Bluetooth Media channel (if it's On demand).
If it's a constant stream of Audio (i.e. the content of the stream changes) then it's probably a little more involved. If it goes above a volume threshold for longer than some threshold time, switch to it. When it goes silent, switch back.
This can't be that hard. The Bluetooth Phone Protocol probably makes this easier to do with it than the Bluetooth Media (e.g. A2DP)
I think a LOT of people have this issue, but they don't understand what's going on and don't even know how to complain about it.
But it should not be that hard to address and put the Uconnect a step above the competition.
There probably should be a separate Bluetooth Protocal for On Demand Media (like Nav, Alerts etc.) to make this cleaner.
I am software developer and think the whole Uconnect system, along with the Dash UI is absolutely brilliant execution. So I know you have the talent to do it, and do it in such a way that this feature is clear and easy to use.
You could even have it on by default. That is, if there is "active" content on the Bluetooth Media channel, switch to it. Most users, most of the time will want to hear THAT. In case there are situations where users don't want that behavior and like the way it is, make it defeatable.
