Cherokee comparison with 04' GC

I am interested in the new V-6 Cherokee and recently compared it to my current 04' GC with 4.7 V8 and found it to be very close. Here are the key dimensions with the 04' GC before the slash and the new Cherokee after the slash: weight 3989/4044, WB 106/106, external length 181.5/182, height 69.4/67.8, external width 72.3/73.2, payload 1000 lb/1000 lb, cargo area behind rear seat approx 43 cu ft/ approx 30 cu ft, tow limit 5000 lb/ 4500 lb. , HP 235/271, torque 295 lb-ft/ 239 lb-ft.

Re: Cherokee comparison with 04' GC

I too thought it may be a good replacement for my '04 GC, but exterior dimensions are about all that are similar between the two. The Cherokee interior is actually closer in size to the Compass/Patriot twins than the '04 GC.

Companies love to use passenger volume, but it can be misleading:

Passenger Volume
- '04 GC = 95 ft^3
- '14 Patriot = 104 ft^3
- '14 Cherokee = 104 ft^3

So, looking at that alone, you'd think, great more space.
But where are you getting that space?

Here's the breakdown (WJ/MK/KL):
Front Headroom: 39.7/41/39.4
Rear Headroom: 39.5/39.9/38.5
Front Hip room: 56.5/52.3/53.8
Rear Hip room: 52.4/51/49.9
Front Shoulder room: 58.9/54.5/57.6
Rear Shoulder room: 57.8/54/55.1
Front Legroom: 41.7/40.6/41.1
Rear Legroom: 35.3/39.4/40.3

So, as you can see, headroom and legroom are better in the newer vehicles, but hip/shoulder room are worse. Most likely due to safety regulations.

Re: Cherokee comparison with 04' GC

The new Cherokee is built on a front-drive platform, which is another point that makes it closer to the Compass/Patriot than to the Grand Cherokee. It's really apples and oranges. They're fundamentally different vehicles and the Cherokee may be a good or bad replacement for you for reasons that aren't obvious from the numbers alone.

^I agree with that assessment. You need to see, touch, and drive in order to decide.
