Problems with 2000 4.7 v8 starting

Hey guys! Great site, glad I found it.

I have a slight problem getting my Jeep to start. It's kind of intermittant, sometimes she starts first time, others not.

Basically, when it's bad, I turn the key, the ignition turn over, but then it seems to struggle to actually fire. I'm guessing it's the spark plugs, it's done about 110,000. I had her for almost a year and was fully serviced by dealer by previous owner. Can't seem to find any info on plugs being changed in the service history, but as far as I'm aware these should be good for around 100,000 (correct me if I'm wrong).

The weather doesn't make a difference either. Other thing is that sometimes I start her first time, run into town, have her turned off for 5 minutes or so, start her up and the problem arises:confused:.

She always starts after a few seconds, just doesn't sound very healthy:mad:. Other than that she runs fine. Oh and I recently had the CKP sensor replaced.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks guys!:D:thumbsup:

Aaron

Go and check the spark plugs and see if they are worn. If so then go ahead and change them. I'm sure some others will chime in.

Yeah, mine STARTED to do this and I did the plugs the next chance I had and BAM back to normal, and even idled so much better! Make sure you get decent sparks tho!

Funny you should mention the idle. It does sometimes rev up to nearly 2000 but to date it has been very rare. Just revs up and then back down to normal may be once or twice.

Out of curiousity, any idea what type of plugs I should be using? Not neccesarily looking for top of the range but don't want rubbish either.

Cheers

I've been having the same issue with my 2001 WJ GC Limited. I'd always assumed it was the the starter or battery. Never thought to check the spark plugs...I have 100k+ miles on it so I guess I should give them a look :).

same thing happens on my 01 v8 i just hit 122,00 the other night i have changed my plugs twice since i i had her. Which is a about a year and half mine is now starting to do it again but yeah when it does this i change out the plugs. Right now i am using just the bosch copper ones. i had the platniums in it before that i didnt notcie a difrence in any performance or anything when i switched them ether. i am getting ready to buy all new coils and the E3 plugs i have been hearing good things about them so i will give them a go. so just try changing out the ol plugs and see how she starts afterwards.

Great, thanks guys, I really appreciate all your help. I'll keep you updated on progress. The only problem is it's still dark here from about 5pm when I finish work, so may have to wait until it gets lighter.

Yeah I thought it may have been starter or fuel pump initially, but thankfully this is a job I can do myself and save a fortune  Def check yours and let me know

i found i was having cold start revving problem, then it would hunt up and down when idleing. Gave the TPS a knock and it revved up.. Wiggled the wires. Seemed to have corroded pins. So just unpluged it cleaned it all up. And perfect now :)
