Noises.

I'm about to take my 2014 V6 to the dealer to have them address a list of issues. Before I do I wanted to see if you guys thought these two things were normal:

1) Power steering noise. When the cabin is quiet (radio and AC off, engine low RPM) I can hear a faint whine/whistle that is constant. I'm guessing it's power-steering related, because when I move the steering wheel even slightly the noise changes. It gets noticeably louder when the steering wheel is turned absolutely all the way, however I've heard that this at least is normal.

2) Engine ticking/clicking. When passing parked cars or driving close to a wall/structure with the window open, or when the hood is up, I can hear a clicking noise coming from the engine. It's almost like a diesel engine idling slowly, or a baseball card hitting the spoke of a wheel on a bike that's moving slowly. Opening the hood, it sounds like the main source is the driver's side of the engine. On the passenger's side I also hear a similar, but different and not as loud noise (looks like that one might be coming from the pulley).

Without knowing how loud #1 is I would say both are normal.

A little bit of noise from the power steering pump inst uncommon, especially if you only hear it when you're turning the wheel while stopped and def at full lock at a stop. If it seems louder than you are accustom to you might just want to check the fluid to make sure its topped off.

I have the same clicking sound you hear and believe its either a compressor (I think I tested it does it much less when I have climate control off), related to the air suspension, or there has been a thread or 2 about the stability control system doing a self check shortly after start up.

Just wondering out loud. Does the electric motor that powers the steering pump run full time?

Mine is dead quiet on both issues. I feel lucky on the power steering pump. Lots of comments on that.

There is a good thread on the pump that someone found power steering houses rubbing on the firewall.

But this is the first I heard of a V6 ticking.

What oil are you putting in it? How old is the oil?

On the engine noise: maybe ticking is the wrong term to use. I mentioned the baseball card in a bike wheel moving slowly; you might also say it sounds sort of like a mechanical typewriter. It sounds like this more when the hood is open by the way. When driving with the windows open past parked cars or buildings or anything that will cause an echo, it sounds a little more like a quiet diesel idling. I can't hear it with the windows closed when I'm in the cabin or not driving past any echo-prone areas.

The oil is factory oil, only a few months and a couple thousand miles old. Here's a video: the mic on my phone isn't the best but it gives you a decent idea:

On the power steering noise: I hear it all the time as long as it's quiet in the cabin. Even if the steering wheel is straight or only turned just a little bit and even when the vehicle isn't moving. Again, it is a very faint whistle/moan, but perceptible and constant, though it changes as the steering wheel is moved (while it's moving it sometimes quiets down very briefly, then starts making noise again). If the wheel is at full lock, then it's way more noticeable. From the outside the power steering fluid level looks to be full, but then again I can't see where it ends.

I'm not terribly worried about either issue. Hell, I walked past a newer Buick today and it was making a similar noise to my engine noise but I could hear it very loudly halfway across the parking lot. I just want to make sure when I have the dealer look into both of them I don't get the "it's normal" if it actually isn't.

I have no power steering noise on my 14 v6,it kinda sounds like a injector ticking imo, mine is definitely not that loud but I also haven't had a mic that close either,i do have a slight tick, but I would say injectors, different note,,,my engine on a cold start sounds like lifters ticking for about 3 seconds

My 2014 JGC Summit makes a constant high-pitch tone that can be heard in the cabin. Mine is worse than faint -- it is very annoying and can be heard while driving with with the radio on. I imagine it is what tinnitus must be like as it presents in the cabin as a constant ringing in the ear.

Dealer checked it and said that Jeep considers it to be the normal operating sound of the power steering unit. Nothing they can do.

I'd be happy to hear if anyone has had any luck getting it fixed. I wonder if all Jeeps make the noise or if I just drew the short straw.

The ticking definitely sounds like injector noise. And, from the audio on the video it doesn't sound "abnormal." Then again, you said the audio quality isn't that good. You might want to use a mechanic's stethoscope and pin-point which ones are the loudest. You'd also get a good idea if it is, in fact, the injectors as the cadence of the noise would be the same listening with the scope (just clearer).

Thanks all. It's at the dealership now, I'll let you know what comes of it.

Sorry to hear that MichGeo. Mine is definitely not that loud. To be honest it would probably be considered louder than "very faint", but I don't think it can be heard with the radio on unless maybe the volume is at 1, although I've never had the volume that low.

Hey there, any news on that whining noise which changes pitch when turning the wheel? I have it on my '14 Ecodiesel and it's driving me nuts! They replaced the pump bit it's still the same as before.... What happened to your Jeeps? Any fix or reason found? I call "it's normal" Bullsh..! Test-driven many other Jeeps and none had this issue..

Re: Noises.

I took the loss and sold my Jeep. Life is too short to suffer the misery and battles over noises & vibrations that Jeep says is normal.

I had a 1996 Grand Cherokee Limited that I drove 250K miles over 10 years. I couldn't stand my 2014 Summit or the local dealer after just a few months.

My opinion of the dealer soured because they were dismissive without wanting to actually look at problems. It was a an ordeal to convince them that mine was missing buttons on the console, which it was. I have an old rant posted about it. Jeep later issued a TSB.

Good luck with yours.
