2014 models - what's going on???

First, I really like the way the 2014 models look...especially when they have the base headlights (I dislike the black plastic filler under the upgraded headlights and I'm not a fan of the Audi-esque LED surrounds) that I can get on the Limited.

Anyway, I've researched reliability issues on Edmunds.com and on TrueDelta.com and the 2014 models appear to be horrible when it comes to reliability. I know some people will reply by saying that people who aren't having problems don't normally post to say that they aren't having problems...I get that. The "squeaky wheel gets the grease" theory. But it is still troubling when True Delta has the reliability of the 2014 models pegged all the way on the "bad" end with 80 entries. And I read all 29 reviews on Edmunds of the 2014 Grand Cherokee and found only one that was positive. Most complained about similar problems (mostly electrical/stereo & transmission problems).

I don't expect Jeep to be as reliable as Honda or Toyota, but I don't expect Jeep to be down there with Land Rover either.

The "opt-in" type sites will nearly always show a skew to the worst side of things because it's more likely that someone will complain about a problem than provide kudos on a good experience. Yes, there have been and are some issues with the vehicles, but "18 negative responses" do not necessarily have statistical meaning when you consider how many tens of thousands of the vehicles have been purchased and are on the road.

Looks like Chrysler just came out with a recall for electrical issues on 2014's...the Ram trucks as well...

KBB.com is also bad. True Delta is very disturbing. I was seriously considering taking the plunge - but way too many red flags.

Six months and 3200+ miles and I've had no problems. Even a thousand JGCs with problems is way less than 1% of '14s produced. If you want to be scared away from a particular vehicle, just head to the internet and start reading, that's where people with problems go to gripe. Seriously, every make of vehicle has some problems, and I don't hear any more about the JGC than other makes. If you really like it, buy it, that's what I did, and I have no regrets.

I fully understand that. But here's the thing--if what you are saying is true, then I'd see the same thing for all other vehicles. But clearly not all vehicles have similar results on the sites I've read. So tell me, is the stuff I'm reading on True Delta inaccurate? What about people who post reviews on Edmunds? And why do I find a mix of positive and negative reviews when I look at other vehicles on Edmunds? See my point?

Anyway, I'm honestly thinking about a 2014 GC, but I really don't want to spend time at the dealership fixing issues. Quite honestly, if Toyota didn't make the new 4Runner so unbelievably ugly, I'd just get another one. But I can't stomach the looks of the new 4Runners and the next generation is at least 3 years away.

I feel the same way. Then again, I could be one of the lucky ones who has no issues....so I'm torn. I really like the vehicle a lot, but I don't have a lot of confidence that it won't turn into a nightmare.

I agree with you, Jim. Statistically, N=80 is in no way reliable. It's just like when you take Tylenol and there is a myriad of side effects listed but none happen because it's, in fact, an outlier. Don't get caught up in a few reviews. If there were thousands of people having these issues maybe this would be more valid.

True....but at the same time, statistics don't lie. If only there are only 80 respondents and the vast majority (if not all) of them are reporting problems, then what does that tell us? That only people with problems bother to submit data to True Delta? That seems unlikely, no? I do agree that 80 respondents is insignificant when considering the big picture, but then again, where are the people who should be submitting positive data? Something just isn't right...

NavyDoc 10-02-2013 09:04 PM

It doesn't matter who reports what when the amount of people reporting is so low. I suppose you'll make your choice with whatever criteria you choose; I'm just trying to point out that making a decision based on a few folks might be a mistake.

They don't lie, they are just useless with such a small sample set; "The law of large numbers".
