Dash speakers

Does anyone know if a 4 inch speaker will fit in the stock 3.5 inch speaker location in the dash. I'm looking to upgrade my stock ba dash speakers with some boston se45's and was wondering if i could get them to fit with a little shaving of the opening. Mounting depth shouldn't be an issue as far as i can tell? Anyone done this?

Not sure but I have a set of slightly used Mopar Kicker dash speakers that I would probably sell you. Will plug directly into your factory wiring and drop right into those openings.

Space is pretty tight in there. I upgraded mine to the SE35's and they fit pretty perfectly. You might have to do a lot of shaving/modifying to get them to fit, and even then, you probably would have a difficult time concealing them under the mesh grille. I don't have the measurements in front of me, but I'm assuming the depth is also different on the 45's.

It was actually because of your recommendation I have this question....I wanted the se35 but can't find any for sale...I found some se45s which are four inch so that's really an extra quarter inch all the way around so I'm hoping I can squeeze them in....I really can't get a clear answer on whether upgrading to the kicker amp/ speakers without a sub if I will lose more low end then I have now?

Here's a set for sale for $55ish shipped if you just buy those, or free shipping if you order over $99, which would save you like $12 in shipping. For reference, I paid $55 for mine when I bought them new (I looked up my receipt).

Boston Acoustics SE35 Full Range Car Speakers at Onlinecarstereo.com

I can't answer your Kicker question as I opted to use the BA amp until it dies...fortunately it's still doing quite well.

They don't actually have any se35's... I paid and ordered them but they contacted me a day later and informed me they are no longer available. I listened to my buddy's kicker system and was not impressed...not trying to offend anyone but i just didn't find it to have a very natural sound... it is cleaner but I believe its only due to the fact that the rear speakers aren't very loud....I think "upgrade" is kind of a joke...the crossover frequencies are unnatural unless you are planning to add a sub... I do like how it seemed to be very forward bias which is my preference especially in surround mode... anyways listening to the kicker set up really got me to take a look at my Boston setup... first thing I did was disconnect the rear speakers and the sound improved 99%... IMO those rear speakers or rather the full range they have going to them are garbage....with the rear speakers unplugged the sound become incredibly cleaner similar to the kicker.. so then I scored some Boston fx3 3.5's new for the dash and now the BA system truly is "premium"... its clean clear crisp and best of all the soundstage is just very natural and balanced...I was reading the Boston acoustics section on wkjeeps.com and when Jeep originally introduced the BA system the brochure showed only woofers in the doors (which is how it should've been but for some reason they ended up sending full range to the rear...so anyways long story short I get very nice mid and high ambiance naturally from the acoustics in the car but I would like to connect the rear speakers again for low only...I'm thinking of a low pass of 120-140hz....anyone else done this or have any suggestions on a different crossover frequency?

That sucks about the SE's, but it seems like you have even better speakers now. Looks like the specs on the SE's and the FX3's are identical except the FX3's somehow handle double the peak and RMS wattages. I don't know a lot of people who push that many watts to their speakers (FX3's are capable of 60w RMS), but I'll bet they sound good! Since I kept the OEM headunit/amp, 30w RMS is plenty for me  )

Glad you like the premium sound! :D

Ya i would have preferred the se35's as they are newer and i got the se65s for the rear but they seem pretty hard to come by now.(EDIT:the fx3's sound great, im just one of those weirdo's that like everything to match even though you cant see the speakers!!! :) ) Does anyone know what the crossover point is for the front door speakers... I know on the kicker amp its about 250hz... I would like to be half of what the front speakers are...so like 125-140hz?

LaredoX 11-21-2013 10:15 PM

Well I crossed the rears with a 100hz low pass and the BA system is epic!!!! IMHO night and day over the kicker system without a sub....the bass response is there and the whole sound is just so natural and balanced!!!! If you have the BA system replace the dash speakers and put a low pass on the rears and you will fall in love your Jeep again!! lol :)
