A short story for your reading pleasure:

So my new overland FINALLY arrived. I spent a romantic evening in my garage with the user manual and the warm glow of my 8 inch touch screen. The phone is synced. The manual is read. Time to show off my new ride..

I fondle the little green phone icon oh so gently before the first push and say the magic words, "call Brian mobile." After a short conversation to confirm that I, in fact do not sound like I'm speaking from an echo tunnel, Brian says, "hell yeah let's go for a ride!" So Sara and I head out for our maiden voyage.

With giddy enthusiasm, I follow up with another push of the other magic button,
"Navigate to Brian..."
"Locate Brian..."
Nada! No love.

Was i too eager? did i give off an air of desperation? Did i push her little button with too much vigor?

No. Sara assures me the jeep finds me just as sexy as she does!

it seems this thing will sync my contacts for CALLING but not their addresses. Figuring we'll just work around it, I have Sara pull out my phone (damn! I still have to be able to pull out my phone) and look up his address. But hark!! ...

My jeep informs me that I'm too stupid not to type on my keyboard while driving. Hello! That's the navigator's job!! (thin the herd. Just sayin). So we have to pull over to manually enter his address (and yes, we tried reading it out loud but WhoConnect kept telling me to "Say the name of a POI" or "I don't understand, please repeat."). Our first date and she's already irrational.

After pulling over and getting the nav running, we're back on our way! Then Sara pulls out her laptop so we can set up our WIFI hot spot. But instead, i atart seeing my own hotspots as, WHAT?! THAT too is not available while driving!!! This was in fact one of the selling points for getting the Jeep before an upcoming road trip. We can still work while on the road! Awesome! But no!!!

Seriously?! I don't even eat in my car. let alone talk on the phone, text, put on makeup (I've seen guys do it. I swear) or read the paper!

I'm smart enough to have the navigator (person riding shotgun) NAVIGATE! How many Darwin awards had to be given out before JEEP had to decide that there couldn't POSSIBLY be others in the car who would be able to utilize these tools besides the driver? What about the passenger? What about the upcoming child when she's old enough to want streaming movies in the back seat?

Okay.... Stepping.... Down.... Off soapbox!!

Does anyone know a hack to give me back the power to decide WHO Connects?

More fun with Uconnect. Nav not only won't access my address book, but also doesn't recognize places that actually exist! We're not talking new construction here. And last night it wouldn't even recognize the entire city of Saint Louis Park, MN.

Looks like I'm still back to futzing with my phone for directions.

Instead of just talking to yourself;

Thanks Bill. I was getting lonely. :-)

That thread seems to be all about downloading an update but I couldn't find anything that addresses the issues I mentioned.

Re: WhoConnect??
The update is for the uConnect and is supposed to correct various issues, including problems with the navigation system among other things.

What version of uConnect software are you running?

Good question. I JUST got my jeep. I'll see if I can figure out the version.... Hang on... Heading to garage....does 13.29.8 Mae sense?

If you just did the update don't panic yet. ;)

It sometimes throws things out of whack for 24 to 48 hours. Most of the time they self correct.

Re: WhoConnect??
Like Bill said, once you do the update the radio/UConnect will act weird for up to 48hrs (this is normal). The latest software update should fix most (if not all) of the issues you were seeing.

Re: WhoConnect??
It's been a few weeks since I did the update.

I'm a bit shocked at how bad this whole part of the vehicle is. It's barely a half step up from the Garmin I bought in 2002.

It now brings up 2 identical numbers for my girlfriend when I try to voice command call her. Even though I only have one number for her. I still have to select it in a list now (didn't do that before the update).

And the nav itself is off the charts bad. It takes me the most out-of-the-way routes to get somewhere I know how to go directly in half the time.

I don't know if it's Garmin or Jeep who's gotten lazy on this, but they're really behind in where technology should be by now. Don't get me wrong, I love my jeep, but I'm still stuck with using my iPhone to get accurate directions. :-\

Re: WhoConnect??
It's pretty much standard on factory systems to block things like navigation input and video on the front-seat screen. I saw that there is now a Lockpick product that works on the newer uconnect hardware, which should let you disable the vehicle-in-motion lockouts. Though it sounds like you're about ready to give up on it anyway....

I'm just blown away by how BAD the Garmin is overall. But the nav is the worst I've seen. It keeps taking me WAY out of the way of the best route to go, if it even recognizes the address.
