Installing Jeep Mudflaps
 
So I got my Jeep/Mopar mudflaps yesterday. I was able to install 1 before work, lol. Took me about 15 mins total to do that 1.

Anyways, install wasn't that hard. Sure the instructions could use a little more clarity, but any able person SHOULD be able to figure it out, at least the front. I haven't tackled the rears yet.

But my main question is about the 4th screw on the very bottom. Is that even necessary to put on? I really wont want to drill that hole on that plastic piece. The flap seems to be on securely with just the 3 mounting bolt/screws.

I left the bottom screws out on all of them.

Can you post some pictures of them installed? And any install pictures you might have? Thinking about getting some.

Here are mine. That bottom screw allows you to pull the mud flap back a bit and close up the gap underneath. Raising the car to OR2 makes it easy to get a drill in there, if you have QL.

I also left the lower screw out. I put it in one and it really didn't do anything and they felt plenty sturdy. One thing I have learned from molded mudflaps is if they have some room/ flex to move they won't break or damage the vehicle.

I think they look nice and are functional. I live near Seattle. So we get lots of rain and stuff. Can definitely see a difference now from road debris and gunk.

Anyways, I didn't install the bottom 4th screw on any of the mudflaps and like I said, they feel secure to me.

The front sets are pretty straight forward. Everything lines up well. There is a noticeable gap at the very top of the flaps. I would rather it be flush, but oh well. I tried adjusting it by loosening the bolt and pushing it against the panel. Maybe 2-3MM gap? Image is pre-adjustment, so it is a little bit better than shown at the moment.

In the instructions, where I have what's listed as the "Factory screw". It's shown as rivet that you cut off. Well that doesn't make sense since it's a damn screw. There's a clip on the felt liner where that screw goes through to secure the liner from the factory.


You do NOT have to remove the wheel to install the rear mudflap. There's 2 options. Easiest will be with a small angle drill. They say to use a 3/32" drill bit. I find that to be a bit on the small size for the screw. I went to the next size larger.

Other option is, there's quite a bit of flex/play with the lower panel. You see where that poly rivet is on the image, that sort of holds the mudflap in place before hand. I held the bottom portion with my hand and pulled outwards a bit to get just enough room to drill my hole for #3.

For #2, you don't have to drill a hole, but you have to cut a hole. You'll see only the felt liner, but if you feel through it, you'll feel a hole behind the liner. Use a box knife or something and cut an "X" where the hole is.
You can't pull the liner out completely, because of that poly rivet holding the liner directly underneath that spot. But you should have enough wiggle room to reach behind it and feel where you're suppose to slide on those clips that the bolt will go through. It is a pain in the ass to line up blind, but doable. I would then thread the bolt through first and feel the backside to make sure it's lined up without the flaps in place. The clip will stay put when you remove the bolt out.

I didn't use the supplied bolt/clip in place of the "Factory screw". I just used the original and felt it was best, since the factory clip wont fit the supplied bolt.

Then I installed #2 bolt, applying pressure against the panel to get it as flush as possible. Then finished off with #3. I used a small Philips to get it done. Again, didn't bother with #4.

The rears fit flush against the panel.

1 more thing I should mentioned. Since mine is a Limited, the lower panel portion isn't painted.

These flaps don't come with any film/protector inbetween the flaps and panel.

If your panel is painted, you may want to pick up a roll of paint protection film to prevent rubbing.

I know Husky's liners flaps come with this film. I had a set of fronts on my Tacoma.
