Underbody rust prevention?
 
I know new vehicles like the WK2 chassis gets an anti-corrosion bath on the assembly line. Is it worth spraying the underside after delivery anymore? I did this on some of my previous vehicles, not sure it is needed anymore. Thoughts?

Does your state use salt for melting snow and ice in the winter? If not, then no I do not believe it is necessary.

... and a "bath" is an understatement. I'd more associate that with a total submersion. :D

My wife bought a brand new 1972 Mustang in Rochester NY. and chose not to have it undercoated or rustproofed. As you probably know it can snow there from October untill May and they "salt" the roads liberally.
By the time I met her in Florida in 1974, I could lift the body off the frame at any point around that car. The bottoms of each panel looked like the car had been dipped in an acid pit. I never saw anything like that before or since we were married.
I even remember people having their cars "rustproofed" as a dealer option back in the 70's...and that was in FLORIDA! It gave your new Chevy a new car smell that could make you puke!
Bottom line: Auto manufacturers have come a long way since the '70s!

I can get cans of 3m rubberized undercoating for free. I will spay mine next time I have it on a lift or my jack stands.

I had a Chevy Tahoe and the factory said that if I undercoated it then the factory rust through warranty would be void. They said that the truck comes with several systems that prevent rust. They also said that some aftermarket rustproofing actually causes rust. When it was 15 years old, I sold it with 200k miles and it had no rust. I live in Maryland and they salt roads here like crazy. Sometimes they put more salt down than snow. I would suggest that you contact Chrysler and ask them what would happen if you undercoat it.;)

It depends on the vehicle. If a vehicle is prone to rust undercoating is a necessity, I had a 95 escort, when I got rid of it it was 15 years and 185000 miles old. There were a few small spots of rust but that was it, a identical car without undercoating would have had both rear quarter panels about ready to fall off. My dad has a F 250 (looks like a f150 though) he just got his first rust spot this last spring. His brother has a truck 1 year older and did not have it undercoated, his doors are rotting out and so are his fenders. Every vehicle is prone to rusting wherever water can just sit and eat away at the metal, will the wk2 be that way? No one will know for a few years. It also comes down to how good the undercoating is, if it all runs off in a year it won't do anything, but if you fond somewhere where they take all body panels and trim panels off to fill the doors and fenders and such with undercoating it is worth it.

My understanding is most automotive manufacturers use electro-galvanize steel panels as the primary rust control system. Frame and body panel steels arrive with the thin coating applied.

For many parts of the world this is sufficient and further rust proofing is not required. However where salt/sand is used on the roads further rust protection is not necessarily a bad idea. Rock chips can penetrate the coatings and expose the steel to whatever is next to follow. Overtime this can lead to rusting on the panels that take the most beating.

Ultimately my suggestion would be based on how long you plan to keep the vehicle. 6 years or less, I wouldn't bother. Anything more and I would be adding a backup if I lived in a rusty area.

My Overland is 7 days out (I hope, been pushed back once already). I will be adding rust proofing within days of pickup.

Reason I ask is my JK Wrangler is only 5 years old and on one of the door hinges, the paint is bubbling up from rust/corrosion underneath. I understand this may be from galvanic corrosion due to the door being made from steel and the hinge is actually aluminum.

Obviously underbody protection wouldn't have helped with that, but I am curious if there are any such different metal contacts areas under the JGC. Stock corrosion warranties jut happen to run out right when you would face the problem..

Are you having someone do it or doing it yourself? Which product/system? My Wrangler originally had Ziebart undercoating and it was a joke. They barely sprayed anything underneath the vehicle.

Decided to give this a try:

Fluid Film Undercoating

Sounds like a neat idea. There is nothing to chip, crack or fall off and it's very cheap. You can get aerosol cans at amazon.com:

and a little wand thing:

to get into all of the cracks, recesses and crevices in the underbody. That is really the most difficult part. Something that can self level and fill in the voids, something a "hard" coating cannot do. Just cover your brake pads and rotors, cat and manifold/turbo from over-spray and go to town on everything from the engine bay to the suspension arms. Highly rated stuff.
