A few more towing questions
 
Towing rookie here, so sorry for the continued silly questions. I asked a few a week or so ago and you were all very helpful. So here I go...

I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit with a V8. I'm towing a 1200 pound trailer that will be hauling a 500 pound motorcycle.

1) Do I need a transmission cooler? Uhaul recommends it. I would assume a summit is set with the requisite equipment for towing and that this is unnecessary.

2) The only equipment I need to buy is a class 1 hitch, correct? The Summit should come stock with everything else right?

If it's a 4x4, you should already have a class IV hitch behind a plastic cover in the rear bumper. If you have that, you are good to go, except for the ball and ball carrier.

Thanks! Any thoughts on the the need for an intercooler? I'm assuming no on that one....

Is it a 4 wd? If so you already have all the cooling you need to tow three times the weight you will be towing.

Uhaul is jerking your chain. A 4x4 V8 can tow up to 7,200 lbs and it comes with a heavy duty engine cooler upgrade over the V6. I wouldn't consider a cooler unless you plan to push the vehicle near it's tow limits constantly and at that rate, you should probably invest in a pickup.

Diavel, you need nothing other than male hitch mount and ball. You likely will need a 2" ball but check your trailer before buying one. Uhaul, Wallyworld, or any auto parts or hardware store can sell you one. Link: Draw-Tite Class III Ball Mount with 2" Ball - 3/4" Rise, 2" Drop - 6,000 lbs Draw-Tite Ball Mounts DT40563. You want enough drop from your hitch mount to have a level trailer tounge. A common drop is 2" but you may need more for your trailer.

Other than that, if you are new to towing, a few tips below:

1) Ensure your trailer is hitched properly, including safety chains, pins, and signal wires. You would be shocked how many get this wrong only to lose their full trailer and gear under way.

2) Check all brake lights, night lights, signals, trailer hubs, brake functions, tires, and tire pressure - often.

3) Get your gear strapped down correctly, not only to make sure it doesn't come off the trailer, but so it doesn't flop around damaging your toys.

4) Practice reverse, turns, turn radius in a vacant lot. Pay attention to your side view mirrors.

These are basics but many are ignored even by veterans.

I have only owned one jeep before now. And I'm a little slow when it comes to this stuff. Would the drop on the ball mount totally depend on the trailer wheel size? What kind of drop should I go with if I'm just looking to pull utility trailers with the small wheels?

Trailers with smaller wheels will most likely have a lower hitch height. The only way to know how much drop you need is to measure the height of the hitch when the trailer is level and the height of the receiver in your bumper.

There are some adjustable ball mounts, but if you will only be using one trailer I would recommend getting one specific for the drop you need.

I've found 3 - 3.5in drop to be sufficient for most utility and uhaul trailers (and are readily available at most Walmarts/Auto stores.

If its the only trailer you're going to be hauling ever than you can take measures to figure out exactly what drop you need and get the right hitch (or get an adjustable one like someone said)

+1, get your trailer tongue level and measure the height from the ground, do the same with your WK2 hitch, then buy your drop accordingly.

Here's a photo of my 2011 WK2 Overland hitch height from the ground. In my case a 2" drop is suited to a double axle boat trailer, but as stated above a utility trailer tongue is typically lower to the ground so a 3"+ drop is more typical for that setup.

Chances are you may need a 4" or even 6" drop. I have a utility trailer with 12" wheels and it needed about 6" to be level. The tongue is roughly 16.5" from the ground. My race trailer has full size (15") wheels and tires and actually has a lower tongue height. Granted, it is a low-boy with a drop torsion axle and not typical leaf springs. Point is, you can not judge by trailer size or wheel size. *Most* flat bed open utility trailers are going to be around 18" tongue height but the best thing to do is measure. Distance A- Distance B= Drop required
If anything it is better to have the trailer slightly nose up when unloaded. It will settle with cargo. My race trailer is nose up a tad, but when the QL goes to Aero mode on the highway it is perfectly level
