2011 power inverter socket upgrade

I don't recall this being discussed here so some of you may find this interesting.

On the 2011 Wk2's, we were blessed to have only a 2 prong power inverter outlet located in the rear of the console. Alot of my small electronics have 3 slot plug. I refuse to butcher the plug just to be able to use it in my Jeep. So, I did a tad bit of research and found that the power inverters are the same for 2011-2013 Jeeps as are output harnesses connectors. The outlet housings themselves are different however (2 slots vs 3 slots).

So, in a nutshell.... for appx $12 and 15-20 minutes, you can swap your 2 slot outlet to the newer 3 slot. Note: the updated outlet still uses the top 2 long slots. The bottom slot (generally a ground) is left blank so 3 slot plugs will fit.

The install is quite simple and requires removal of the rear quarter of the console to access the tension clips that secure the outlet. I removed the arm rest/lid and slid the armrest assembly forward just a bit to have extra room. Be careful of the USB cable if you have one in the armrest. You may need to remove the ventilation housing (2 screws) to gain access to the outlet retainer clips once the rear portion of the console is removed. Remove the old outlet and simply snap in the new one and plug in the connector. If you have rear heated seats, you may want to also disconnect the heated seat connectors to gain some extra room if you have large hands. Reinstall the ventilation housing (if applicable), reinstall the rear of the console and 3 screws that secure the armrest assembly and you are good to go.

Hey I'm new here, this seems to be an awesome fix so I could charge my laptop. Is this a legit upgrade, I'm guessing the Chrysler part # you provided means it's ok to do this upgrade,,,I have a 2011 JGC Laredo x, what year was yours?
Why didn't they just put three prongs from the start haha. Thanks for the info and help.

Mine is a early build 2011 Limited. I feel it was an engineering issues with the earlier builds as the part number for the power inverter itself and the harness has not changed through the years. As I stated in the original post, the 3 slot socket is wired exactly the same as the 2 slot. The slot in the bottom of the upgraded socket is physically blank. Just allows usage of 3 prong plugs. For home use, the bottom connector is an additional ground for surges, spikes etc...

Note: The factory inverter is rated at 150watts. Please double check the equipment you are plugging in as not to overload the inverter.

I get what you mean, it only allows a three prong to "fit" but the top two slots are still only active connections. Did you have to trim the console hole to fit the 3 prong housing, or was it just tight. Thanks again, I'm thinking of doing it asap.

The upgrade socket housing is exactly the same size as original. It snaps into the existing slot from the old socket housing. The outside dimensions are exactly like the original.

Hey again, just stopped by my Jeep dealer and they said that housing is for a Wrangler, soo is yours a limited Wrangler or limited grand cherokee? Thanks again

Mine is a Limited Grand Cherokee. Inverter sockets fit multiple Chrysler vehicle platforms.

Not to be a hack, but couldn't you just measure up and drill the third hole in the original connector?

If cosmetics aren't a concern, you may be able to get away by drilling an extra slot. However, the face plates of the sockets are a bit different. The only reasons I opted for the upgraded socket housing instead of modifying the existing was 1: its cheap and 2: clean install.

I will snap a pic comparing the 2 face plates this evening. Have a bit to do this afternoon.
