Key replacement - 06 wk
My wife lost her set of keys. Now we're down to only one key for the WK. The dealership is quoting some crazy numbers! ($245 includes programming)

What is a fair price? Is this something a locksmith is capable of doing?

Re: Key replacement - 06 wk
You should definitely check with a good locksmith. I had a Nissan key programmed by a locksmith. He had a duplicator that took no time at all.

I compare that to when I originally bought the car and the dealer had given me only one key. It took Nissan 15 minutes and required the use of electronic tools in the car to make a second key.

But, in fact, doesn't the owner's manual tells you how to program a new key all by yourself, using a good key?

$245 sounds about right from a dealership.

That includes the key, cutting the key, and then programming the key (which I think they charge 30min labor).

You can only program a new key yourself if you have TWO keys already programmed (this prevents a valet or someone who has one key from making a duplicate).

The above post is correct, a good locksmith may be able to cut and program the key.

In the past, I have bought the key uncut and un-programmed online, and then had it cut and programmed by the dealer (no local locksmiths were able to program at the time). That cost around $150 total. I now ensure I have three working keys, so if I lose one or it is damaged I can program a replacement for much cheaper.
