Texas Jeep 02-20-2010 09:34 AM brakes are sticking!
So a couple of weeks ago I noticed a strong metal burning smell while driving and found it to feel sluggish at times when driving. After a few minutes I realized that my front right break was stuck.

After about a few pumps of the brake pedal it finally came undone. At that time, i thought that was the end of it....until last night.

I was coming home from work and it did it again. The same brake got stuck again and the whole vehicle would pull to the right. I had to get off and hit the caliper with a piece of metal and also pumped the brakes until it finally released the rotor.
This happened several times.

Does anyone have an idea on why it does this?

Re: brakes are sticking!
in general, brake calipers have slide pins that help them move in and out. sounds like one of those pins may be siezed. get the caliper off anfd get some new hardware for it. napa......

not sure wj, but on wk the parking brake is inside the back of the brake rotor and if the pads wear too much or something gives out, it can affect the main braking.

Re: brakes are sticking!
Rob is right, you need your caliper pins lubed, they are probably siezing and that is what is causing your problems

Re: brakes are sticking!
sounds to me like the caliper pistons are sticking. I would get the caliper rebuilt or get a new caliper.

I had the same problem with mine, got the whole calliper rebuilt then it done it again. Went back to the shop and they were stumped, decided to change all the hoses to the callipers and its never done it since.

I just have rotor warping issues so I'm gonna get the new fall '02-on calliper upgrade in a month or so from just for jeeps.

Re: brakes are sticking!
You have a 01, so that's got the teeves calaper. They are known to have problems and there is a FSB to replace the front caliper with akebono.

It sounds like you have a "Lazy" caliper, and instead of re-building them I would just upgrade the calipers to Akebono. The stealerships sell them as a kit. Let me know how much they want, and I may be able to get some to you shipped cheaper. I get wholesale prices at my dealership. Since I have 6 Mopars!

Re: brakes are sticking!
Thanks guys. It got really bad today. The rotor and brakes started smoking. Had to pull over and wait a while.
Wierd thing is that I can be driving at 60 miles an hour and then, without applying the brakes, the car will start to vibrate and the brake will start to stick....Ill then have to slow down to about 30 mph and pull over where ever i can.

I appreciate the offer 206WJ but ill have to change the caliper tomorrow. Autozone has a brand called Fenco Reman but in the application section it notes Akebono. Is this an Akebono caliper or is the Fenco just a replacement for Akebono?

Re: brakes are sticking!
yes them are the akebonos youll need the fenco is just who makes them for akebono.

would recomend changing your pads too they are proly shoot from the heat of the brake wearing like that, defintly if it was smoking. good luck

Re: brakes are sticking!
You will have to buy new pads too. They are a different style and use clips to hold them in.

Re: brakes are sticking!
had the very same thing happen to me
everyone is right about it being the calipers

Re: brakes are sticking!
I read somewhere that the WJ was also having an issue with the flex lines within the braking system.. the flex lines swell inward and restrict fluid flow. Could be worth looking into..
