First Post! Backup Camera Power Tap?

Hello everyone,

Making my first post on this forum! Have been a member on JF for quite some time, recently bought a '06 WK Limited and ran across this forum. I have been lurking for quite some time and there is some great stuff over here!

My first question is as follows:

Recently bought a Pioneer Double Din, Metra Mounting Kit, PAC Harness, Nav Bezel, and Backup camera. I'm currently doing the install and had a question as to where to get power for the backup camera. The HU I bought states that the reverse camera will come on when shifted in reverse and also can be turned on manually whenever. I would like to maintain these functions. If anyone has some insight that would be awesome! Thanks!

I tapped the reverse light wire, this is on a WK2 but it should work the same if you can trace the wire.

Will this allow me to use the function to turn on the camera whenever? Thanks for the reply!

I don't know on aftermarket decks. On the OEM radio you can get lockpick to allow that and to play video in motion.

Awesome, thanks for all your help! Just didn't know if Ishould tap into that reverse light or go for something like the cigarette lighter

Basically the trick is to get power to the camera when the vehicle is in motion, if you can accomplish that without using the reverse light wire then what you want is possible.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to shoot for the cigarette lighter in the rear tap and see if that works. I'll report back with results. Probably wont be until this weekend though.

The 12V plug in the rear is always powered, even when the car is off. It is best to tap into something that is energized when the ignition is on to prevent your ignition off draw from being too great.

If you have the ba sound system, I know there are cycled power wires around the amp. May be something on the regular system too.

If I had to pick being able to only turn the camera on in reverse vs being able to turn it on whenever but getting a flat battery every few days I know what I would do!

I looked at the specs on the camera, and the draw for the camera is only 200 mA...Is that still something to worry about? Also, will it still be drawing power if the HU isn't set to the mode to see the camera?

Normal IOD draw is below 50mA, iirc ,so, yes that will be quite an increase.

I don't know about the specifics for your camera, but they are usually wired to come on when the vehicle is put in reverse or at least linked to the ignition and so do not have internal power switches cycled by the head unit.

Basic rule of thumb for automotive electrical is that there are very few things you want wired up to be energized when the vehicle is off

Finished up the install last night and tapped into the rear power outlet and it worked great. Looks as if it only gets power when the ignition is on which works out great.
