last minute trip ideas

OK guys I'm not sure where to put this so please be easy on my. My fiancÚ and I were going to take the jeep to Florida in 2 weeks. But due to a recent death in the family we aren't able to travel down to Florida. We live in North Jersey. Would anyone be able to recommend any good getaways near the tri state area. Looking for somewhere now in the 5-8 hour driving range. Thank you.

Drive over to Newport and take some tours through the mansions...It's off-season so it won't be too busy but you can still do the Ocean Walk and downton Newport. Then on the way to or back from Newport you can spend a night at Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun for some nice dinner and maybe catch a show. There is also Mystic which has a pretty neat downtown area and the Aquarium.

Just an idea.

Berk

P.S. Sorry for your loss.

Newport is a good option.

You could also head a little farther north to Portsmouth, NH which is sort of your typical old New England port town (similar to Newport).

It is very popular for its wide variety and # of restaurants and breweries in a downtown area where you can walk to everything (I also live there so I might be slightly biased :D ). Here is a slightly over the top review from the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/04/tr...h-nh.html?_r=0

I love Portsmouth! I'm in NH/MA/VT quite often for work and it's in my top three New England places to visit. Great atmosphere!

Between the above locations is our favorite weekend spot: Cape Ann, MA. Take I-84 to I-90 to Route 128.

Another option would be a drive to upstate NY, the Finger Lakes region, and go to the wineries and do some wine tasting.

I do recommend Portsmouth as well. It's a beautiful little city plus there is no sales tax in NH which is always nice. Also a few miles north in Kittery, Maine there is big outlet mall right on Route 1, and one of my favourite restaurants in NE, Robert's Maine Grill where you can eat great seafood.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Thank you to everyone who shared some info. The wife wants to go to lake George for a few days. I was able to convince her to go to NH for the rest of the trip.

Lake George is good choice. Check out Million Dollar beach archaelogical dig. They were looking for artifacts from French and Indian war and are digging up 8000 to 10,000 year old Native American artifacts to their surprise. Just in thenews this week so I have not had a chance to check it out yet.
