Thoughts after 2 weeks in a 14 WK2

Hello folks, newbie here from 4Runner land.

I've been reading the forum for several weeks and appreciate the insight everyone has lended to many questions/concerns I've had prior to buying and then post-pickup. Because there are so many impressions of the 2014 WK2 I thought I'd add mine in hopes it'd help someone make a decision to buy or avoid one of their owns.

What I came from: 2012 4Runner Trail - left it because it was just unrefined and started having lots of trim issues/suspension squeaks/tired of being in a truck. The dealer here was of virtually no help and successfully addressed none of the primary concerns. Of course, I was ready to abandon ship for something nicer so I really didn't work fixes all that hard.

What I bought: Cherry Red/Beige Overland V-6 4x4 with OR pkg. Built in June.

Likes: Love the WK2. It feels very similar to a BMW I used to own - very refined. Fit and finish is pretty darn good. Technology is very impressive, layout is superb, rides plush and quiet, transmission is quick and fuel economy has been pegged at 20 during my 90% city driving.

Dislikes: Virtually nothing (caveat with the two issues below) - I am honestly shocked at how great this car is! Beige interior gets smudged easily but it cleans up pretty well! There is something creaking in the overhead console, but it isn't loudly. A minor issue I discovered today is that the weather seal between the lower windshield and wiper blade cover is bowed outwards. The two major problems I've encountered are related to the Quadra-Lift suspension and the dreaded 65 mph shimmy.

QL issue - on day three of owning the truck I left my house for a local mountain bike area and the entire way got the QL unavailable-hot/cooling alert. Since I really wasn't in 'need' of it, it didn't interfere with my day. Interestingly, this hasn't returned and the QL has worked well since then, including a quick jaunt on a Jeep trail yesterday (it did great - every bit as good as the 4Runner - albeit a bit more slowly).

Steering shimmy at 65 - this is the big problem with my SUV. Took it in today thinking it'd have a quick tire balance only to find out this is a major problem Jeep hasn't issued a fix for (according the mechanic). I've spent the last hour reading other posts about this and am uncertain about what to do next. Such a great vehicle with such a glaring problem. I'm not excited about trying to get this fixed. Oh well, at least most of my driving is sub-65.

That's all I have. The WK2 has exceeded my expectations and if it weren't for the shimmy and the creaking console I'd literally be beside myself with praise. As it stands, it's still awfully praiseworthy. Very pleased to be out of the 4Runner (we'll see if I can say this after more than 600 miles with the shimmy).

Cheers,
Mike

Great review! The QL issue has a fix released, I believe. Keep us up to date on what happens with your steering!

Change one - steering wheel shimmy was solved by a road force balance by a tire shop (Firestone).

I had a noise that was really annoying when I first bought my Jeep. Took it into the dealer and they found the source to be inside the overhead console. They pulled the overhead console down (you have to pull really hard) and there was something loose in there that they connected and solved the noise.

Thanks for the heads up - I might give that a whirl - somewhat apprehensive to yank it off myself.

I also came from a 4runner. I had a '11 Limited. I hated how it had 20" rims, but very skinny tired. I also hated how I kept bumping my legs on the steering wheel column. I'm 6'3" and have long legs and it was just an annoyance. I also hated how the seats were uncomfortable. I got a '13 Summit in the V8 and love it. Never thought I'd be a Jeep owner.

Update after one month:

I gotta say I love this truck. I am absolutely shocked at how much better it is over my 12 4Runner Trail. I love it - so luxurious, so smooth, and a pretty darn good off road rig, too.

With the 'shimmy' fixed by a quick balance the only other irksome issue was the overhead console. After attempting to pull it down (I yanked pretty hard, it didn't budge) the creak from above is gone. Couldn't tell you how, couldn't tell you why. The net result is the interior is as quiet as can be.

At 1200 miles I'm averaging about 21 mpg in the city and the WK2 exceeds my expectations.
