USAA Car Buying Service?

New member on Jeep Garage. I see a lot of members with CIB, Master Aviator Badge, pics of their Blackhawk, B-52, etc so I figure there are veterans/servicemembers on this forum that belong to USAA.

Anyone use USAA Car Buying Service and was happy with the price they quoted? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Looking at purchasing a 2014 JGC Limited.

I am not a USAA member, but my sister did get a price from them one time. She called me to discuss it, and although it was a very fair price, I made a couple of phone calls an did quite a bit better for her.

Of course, their success may vary from make to make. She was looking for an Impala.

I used USAA and PenFed to start the negotiating process. Price seemed fairly good but given the reports on here regarding pricing, I asked for more off. Since there is no obligation to use them after you get your "pricing certificate" I don't think there is any risk starting with them. My dealer didn't care what I used - they are making money any way! I wound up paying about 1K less than their price, on top of the $500 military rebate. Having said that, it took me a few days!

I used the USAA certificate, came to about 3% below invoice. Although not the best deal in the world, I think it is fair and went with it.

Re: USAA Car Buying Service?

I used it, to an extent. Its pretty close to the software on KBB but if your dealer is a partner with USAA, they'll take the car buying price no questions asked from what I understood. The dealer I went to actually came in a little under USAA's quote, but it was nice to know I could get that without having to negotiate. I'm sure I could've gotten a better deal but just didn't have the time to mess with it unfortunately. The one thing I will say, is that their software is a little off. When you build the model you want on Jeep.com or even on KBB, the price will be adjusted off of different packages. USAA's wasn't as accurate. Hard to explain, so here's my example: I wanted the security and convenience group and all weather package in my 2014 Laredo. Those two packages have some overlapping features so when you select them together, the price is adjusted down slightly from if you had selected just one so you're not paying twice for some features. USAA's software didn't make this calculation. If S&C cost $2k by itself, and all weather cost $1k by itself, USAA would add those features up to equal $3k and then would adjust their target price off of that. Jeep and KBB adjusted their prices so that instead of $3k for both, you'd pay $2,500 (all of these numbers are estimates, I don't remember quite what they were). I brought this up to a USAA rep and her best advice was to just take whatever the discount was off of their total target price, which defeats the purpose a little since that could probably be argued by the dealer. Hopefully all of that makes sense, for me it only would have been a few hundred dollars difference, but every little bit helps. Either way, I was happy with the service and the number it gave me, but do compare it to KBB's at least.

I used it for a my last car and the price I got was about 1K better than I got from any local dealers. I guess I was dumb not to push for more but they also gave me money for a trade in that was fair given that the car had 286K on it so I took their quote and bought the car. I priced A GC and it was 900 off from the group buy price on this site. I guess I might want to talk to the dealer and see if they would budge some as they are a couple of hundred miles closer. The other dealer is close to where my sister lives so the trip would not be all that expensive and would give me a chance to spend some time with her. But closer is easier and all the registration would be a lot simpler.

Re: USAA Car Buying Service?

Appreciate the feedback. I've been tinkering with the Car Buying section of USAA website and reviewing the Estimated Dealer Price. With the Invoice costs on another thread posted and comparing USAA quotes, I'm getting comfortable in coming up with a fair and reasonable offer price with a dealer when that time comes. I kind of regret going too far in this section when you hit View Dealer Pricing; I get 3 Certifed Dealer quotes, but they got my phone number and have been calling non-stop ! Not ready to haggle with dealers yet, so I told them I'll call them in the next couple of weeks to schedule a visit/test drive.

Navy Federal Credit Union has a auto buying service and have been reviewing the quotes there too.

I have used it with success but not for my JGC order. We used it to purchase my wife's Toyota Camry. Tampa area dealer honored the USAA quote. For the Jeep I used my Chrysler affiliate discount, which came in about $500 less than the USAA Car Buying Service quote.

Hope this helps.
