WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
Alright this is my first post here as I just got my first WJ a couple of days ago. Its a 2000 Laredo 4.7.. I got it for a steal at $1700 with only 79000 miles on it.. It was owned by a older man who didn't wanna pay to get the work done and wasn't able to do the work himself anymore.. Body is in great shape but it does need a little TLC.. The old guy believes the tranny was shot..

The problem its having is that when i'm driving and OD is on it will not shift into 4th gear.. It starts to buck and quickly downshifts to 2nd.. It had about 25 codes thrown when i got it.. I replaced the TPS and cleaned the TB as well as changed the spark plugs and Ignition coils on 3 and 5 where it was misfiring.. The MIL went off for a couple days and now its back..

Now i only have 6 codes which are:

ABS code 14 cluster malfunction
p1792 battery power to module disconnected
P0734 4th gear incorrect ratio--it says pending
p1790 malfunction immediately after shift
p0733 3rd gear incorrect ratio-- It also says pending
p0303 cylinder 3 misfire detected--MIL code 43

I drive with OD off that way it doesn't start kicking and bucking because from what I've read 4th gear is only used when OD is on

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated..I can record it and post a video if needed.. Can't wait to get this thing running great so i can start doing some mods and maybe a little off-roading

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
Welcome to the garage.
First check should be the transmission fluid level and if it looks burnt.
A low level could already cause symptoms you have.
Incorrect ratio messages are set when the TCM sees a different ratio between input speed and output speed then it expects. This could be caused by a slipping clutch (due low fluid, low line pressure or worn clutch) or even a faulty speed sensor. That it bucks seems to be a sign that a clutch is really slipping, for whatever reason it is.
So let us know how the fluid looks like and then we see how we go from there.
Indeed the tranny doesn't go into 4th (or 5th) when the OD is switched off.

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
I did check the fluid it doesn't look burnt.. it's red.. I didn't smell it though.. If anything the fluid level is a little to high

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
A little too high doesn't hurt, however much too high and the gears will cause foaming of the fluid and the line pressure will go down and the clutches can start slipping.
If the level seems to be ok, then it probably will be time to drop the tranny pan and check for debris and black sludge in the pan. Slipping clutches will cause a black sludge in the pan. If you have this, you will have to remove the valve body and air test the clutches for leaks (mostly piston seals). There will be a slight air leak when you perform this test, but a blown or broken seal will cause a real oil mist to appear.
I only wonder what the P1790 and P1792 are caused by. They seem to have to do with the TCM.

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
What would you consider to much??

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
Did you check the fluid level with the engine running and the shift lever in Park? (there are (still:rolleyes:) different ideas on checking the level in Park, or Neutral. Manuals say park, while the dipstick says neutral.) Never checked it myself in Neutral, but there seems to be a small difference in level. If it is too high, i would drain a bit until its at the right level, just to be sure. You could loosen one of the transmission cooler lines a bit at the transmission and catch the leaking fluid while the engine runs. Don't loosen it too much, otherwise you get a shower:eek:.

Ok i took a video of it this morning on the way to work to show you guys... It doesn't kick very hard but enough to make me jerk in my seat.. You dont see it until the end when the rpm starts to go up and down

Did you check the fluid level with the engine running? If so, then its much too high. Best is to check it after driving with the transmission at operating temperature.
By the way, you battery terminal nut is loose.

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
You have to check transfluid Hot 170F+ is operating temp find level ground and put it in N then pull the dipstick a couple times and see.

Remember it use's ATF+4 if your low at ALL!

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
Alright checked the tranny fluid again and it was to high... Sooooooo I went to autozone and got a input and output speed sensor now it's Showing code p0700 but not it will buck maybe once the just not try to shift into 4th at all.... Could it be a bad 3rd to 4th shift solenoid??

Frango100 11-10-2013 02:13 PM

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
The P0700 code means that the TCM has stored a fault, so you need to get it scanned to know what is wrong.
Did you drain the excess fluid?

Re: WJ not shifting into overdrive!!
Yeah I drained the fluid... I have a nicer matco mps700..can I check it with that
