AC accumulator

Is it necessary(or prudent)to replace the accumulator while I have the HVAC taken apart? If so is a special tool needed?

Re: AC accumulator

I think that you mean the evaporator, which is inside the HVAC housing. It probably is best to change the evaporator and heater core while you have the HVAC housing open, could save you a second teardown.

Re: AC accumulator

Hi , I changed the evaporator. I read that if the accumulator is disconnected for a period of time, mine has been for 7 weeks. it becomes ineffective and needs to be replaced.I was not aware of this so I figured I would ask. Everything behind the dash has been replaced . This is in the engine compartment. thanks

Re: AC accumulator

For some reason they changed the name of the accumulator to receiver/dryer.
I have a 01-04 manual which states accumulator, while the specific 04 manual says receiver/dryer:confused:.
But both are the same and they have a desiccant bag inside, which absorbs eventual moisture in the lines. If the accumulator was left open for a long time, atmosferic air with moisture could have entered the lines and the moisture would be absorbed by the desiccant bag, reducing its capacity during normal use.
So if you had left the lines open, it would indeed be better to change the accumulator.
According to the manual no special tools are needed for the change. You only have to be carefull with the lines, which are integral to the accumulator, to not make sharp bends or kinks. They also should not pass closer then 3" from the exhaust manifold.
